Our last morning in Santorini!! Sigh!! We got packed up and the hotel provided a free transfer to the port. The port was busy as usual and our ferry was half an hour late. We didn't mind, though, because we ended up talking to a music producer and a singer-songwriter from Toronto! They were a lot of fun and very genuine and interesting.
Our ferry ride was wild! We'd had a few windy days already in Santorini but nothing like the wind we woke to today which really whipped up the waves. The high speed ferry crashed into them full force. Twice, we heard screams throughout the whole ferry as we were buffeted, and there were many people who got sea-sick. Luckily, we didn't have any problems, probably because of our light breakfast and gravol.
We arrived in Mykonos and were greeted by Andreas Kousathanas, the owner of the Kymata Pension, who gave us a quick tour of town and then brought us to a lovely little basement suite steps from Mykonos' famous windmills.
It was a quick walk from the pension to Little Venice, the old port and heart of town, and the bus station, which had buses going to all of the beaches. We walked around, getting our bearings and discovered quite quickly that prices here are much higher than in Santorini. We settled for take-away gyros and souvlaki.
Later, when exploring Little Venice and looking for a place to watch the sunset, we met "Irish Joe" - a waiter at a lovely bar that hosts "the best sunset in town." He tried to hit us up for 13 Euros per drink (11 for the non -alcoholic ones). Eek! He explained that his bar was one of the few "straight" ones at this time of year. We opted instead to go to a grocery store and gelatteria for some cold drinks and ice cream, pull up a rock right beside Little Venice, and enjoy the same sunset for a tenth of the price.
Back at the pension, we watched Hairspray - a bootlegged copy in which the people in the theatre occasionally stood up and obscured the picture that the bootlegger was filming directly off the screen. It was brutal for us (Barry fell asleep), but Connor and Tessa enjoyed it a lot.
