The kids are a little upset that they are missing the first day of school, and all of the excitement about friends, courses, classes, options and lockers. We completely understand that this an important time in their lives, and we sometimes worry that this trip is not in their best interest. However, we hope that when they return, everything will be right with their world and they won't resent missing some of grade 8 and 9. We even gave them the option to call it quits but they both want to continue, so that's good.
We spent the morning packing up and then lounging by the pool, enjoying our last day on Corfu. It was a great little mini-holiday, but we were ready to get back to travelling again.
At 5:00 p.m., we went down the hill to catch the bus to Corfu town, which would then connect to the bus/ferry to Athens. We wanted to go early, so we wouldn't miss the bus. As we were waiting, two scooters went by. When they noticed us, there was a lot of commotion and shouting, and then they turned around. It turned out that it was our friends from our bus and ferry trip to Corfu. We had a chat and then said goodbye, having exchanged E-mails. At this point, one bus had gone by, but the driver said he wasn't going to Corfu. When the bus we were waiting for was 20 minutes late, we stopped a driver from our hotel who was shuttling guests up the hill. He consulted the schedule and said we had 20 more minutes to wait. We looked at the schedule and had no idea what the guy was talking about, but he seemed very sure, so we waited 10 more minutes and then the bus arrived. That either meant the bus was 30 minutes late or 10 ten minutes early. Hmmmm…
We got on the bus, travelled a few blocks and realized that we didn't have the camera in our hands. Barry jumped out at the next stop, checked the baggage compartment and found it attached to his backpack! OK, what more could possibly go wrong?
We got to Corfu and went to buy tickets to Athens. We got the last four. Hurray! Great luck, right? Wrong! The bus had assigned seating, so the last 4 tickets were for the back row. We couldn't recline and had zero leg room. This, in itself, was not a big deal but we were on an overnight bus... off to Athens!
