Pouring rain? What to do? Hmm? Museum day, without a doubt! So we headed for the Deutches Museum. We decided to walk, even though it was raining. Forty five minutes later, after several assurances that it was "just over there", we arrived. We had a few comments along the way that we didn't have enough time which we thought was strange, but when we saw the line-up and noted that the museum closed at 5:00 pm and that it was already 1:30 pm, we understood. The boys wanted to ditch the museum altogether, opting to see Die Hard 4, but after a quick discussion of Bruce Willis vs. 50 exhibit sections spread over 47,000 square meters, where the children could experience the development of science and technology from early origins to present day, Margaret won out and into the line-up we went. The museum was absolutely huge. We started with the history of marine navigation; moved to aeronautics; worked our way through the history of musical instruments, chemistry, and physics; and finished off with technical toys. The highlight was a chemistry demonstration - starting things on fire, creating explosions, combining chemicals to create fluorescent liquids, and demonstrating various other cool reactions. The low point was when Margaret and Tessa got lost in the mining exhibit for half an hour, leaving the boys to wonder if they'd gone to see a movie after all.
After all that brain growth, we headed for the most logical place - another beer garden. This one was called Hirschgarten, and Barry had heard that the locals go there and it isn't very touristy. His research was absolutely right. There were no tourists at all. This is the largest beer garden in Munich (it holds 9000 people), but only three tables were full. Despite the lack of numbers, the place was really cool - deer watched us through the fence - and we had a great meal. When we went to leave however, the skies opened up and a deluge began! When it finally let up a bit, we headed for home in the drizzle. We watched Remember the Titans and got to bed early.
