Early awakening and out the door by 8:00 a.m. Our six hour trip by train was without incident, except the train was split in two halfway through the trip. Luckily for us, the man checking our tickets advised us of this; otherwise, we would have found ourselves in Nuremburg instead of Munich! So we changed cars and enjoyed our last first class train ride in Western Europe. It's always entertaining to watch second class passengers get kicked off when their tickets are checked. We will miss the high life. We read (Connor and Tessa have reading assignments: Forbidden City by William Bell and Animal Farm by George Orwell. Both deal with communism and idealism and revolution, so we're hopeful they can make some connections to what they have been seeing during our travels), and the trip seemed to go very quickly. When we arrived in Munich, we had our usual first moments of not knowing which way was up. After walking for a few blocks, Barry made his usual comment, "It should be right here! Pension….Locarno!!!", and there it was! Very pleased with ourselves, we settled into two beautiful rooms. The weather was very cool, not raining but cloudy - a wonderful change from sweltering Prague - so we set out to explore the neighbourhood, stopping at the Augustiner Beer Garden - considered by many to be the best - along the way. We had a lovely supper of sausages and fries and apple strudel. Then, we headed back and watched Forrest Gump at our pension. Our pension is a lovely place with beautiful pine furniture, comfy rooms, a nice breakfast room, and very friendly atmosphere. The price for three nights, in the centre of Munich, with a ten minute walk to the Marienplatz, is 283.20 Euros. This includes a brilliant breakfast each morning, great views, and great sleeps. We even have two separate rooms tonight (children in one, adults in another), but will go into a room for four when it becomes available tomorrow. Life is good.
