It's been a few days since I have had the internet around so I will try and remember what has happened in the last few days.
Went to the Khmer club, 3 nights in a row! Didn't really rate it after the first night but was talked into going the next two nights by a Scottish girl I met. The drinks were expensive (3 dollars for a bottle of Anchor beer!) and for some reason they stopped the music about 1am and put on about 5 slow songs in a row so that people could get a bit of action on the dance floor. Then, just as suddenly they go back to the usual music. Also, the bars on the beach are not allowed to play music after midnight so it kind of gets a bit boring so if you want to continue partying you have to go to this club.
As you can imagine I didn't get up to much during the day between these nights out. There isn't much to do here anyway apart from that so I just had to lie on the beach feeling a little hung over :P
Finally it was time to move on. I had originally planned to go up to Siem Reap from Sihanoukville but still had plenty of time so I decided to go to a place called Kampot. Derek, the guy I had been travelling was going up to Siem Reap so we parted ways. I ran into Lior, an Israeli girl that I had met in Phnom Penh earlier, and she was going to Kampot as well so we decided to go together.
So on the bus for a couple of hours to Kampot. Some other guys, Rohan and Charlie, who were staying across from us at GST were on their way to Kep (a little after Kampot) and were on our bus.
Arrived in Kampot and went to a place called Bodhi Villa, which was suggested to Lior. I have only been in three backpackers since starting my real trip (no offence Belinda), but this one was the best by far. The first night they only had some 12 dollar accomodation which was the river bungalow. Woke up in the morning to the sun blazing into our room as it was rising over the river, pretty special.
We had went to watch Australia in the world cup the night before and ran into Rohan and Charlie (they came back from Kep because all of their friends were staying in Kampot), and they invited us to go on a trip to Rabbit Island with them. So we got up after our sunrise and headed to Rabbit Island. Felt a bit like we were on Survivor - Rabbit Island. Planned to do some survivor like activities but didn't get around to it.
We arrived on Rabbit Island with a group of 10. There was Rohan (Holland), Charlie and Evelyn (England), Nick (New Zealand), Steven (Canada), Marie (France), Lior (Israel), and Anita, Sara and me (Australia). Quite a diverse crew.
Once we picked the bungalows we were going to stay in we had a bit of a dip and some of the guys went to look for firewood. I had a bit of a look but only found some small branches. There was once sizeable tree that had fallen down but it was covered in red ants. We looked at our pile of wood and decided that it wasn't enough. I said I knew were some more was and we took the axe to retrieve it.
The tree was tangled in some vines and was too big for us to take it out of the ditch where it lay. I decided I would risk my life and jump up on the tree with the ants and chop some of the tangled branches away. The ants attacked, I was constantly swatting then away while chopping the branches off. They bite, it hurts. They got into my undies, and under my armpits. I got through some of the branches and then the axe head came off, my thong broke, I thought the ants had won. I got the axe head and thong and retreated. But Nick said we had come too far and the ants would not win. So in he goes and chops some more of the branches but we still couldn't pull it out so he has to get in and under the tree and lift it up so it isn't caught. Nick, Rohan and I finally pull it out. We are victorious. The whole time Charlie just watched as he kept running away as soon as he got one bite.
In the end the tree wasn't that big as we had to chop off most of the branches but it was worth it.
So that night we just had a fire, I was having a recovery night and so just had one beer. Some of the others stayed up until sunrise. I was hoping that the next day would be sunny so we could lie on the beach and do a bit of reading and swimming. But it was raining all morning so we just slept in and read a bit in the little restaurant they had there. We returned back to the mainland and back to Kampot.
A couple of more nights at Bodhi Villa. Great food, staff, and location. Kampot itself isn't much, either was Kep but I only saw the beach area so I'm not entirely sure what else they have to offer.
I am now back in Sihanoukville waiting for the overnight sleeper bus to Siem Reap, parted ways with Lior who was continuing on with some of the others to Phu Quoc in Vietnam. So back on my own again which is nice, but i'm sure it won't take too long to find someone else to travel with.
Oh yeah, my phone was a bit flat and there was no easy way to charge it while we were on the island. I had turned it off and turned it on occasionally to see if I had any messages. It wasn't until I got back to Bodhi Villa and gave it a proper charge that some messages from Mum came through asking her to contact me as they had tried calling a few days earler. Needless to say she was a bit worried that she couldn't get hold of me, I called her at once :)

Sam Hey there Albie Mangles. Its great to hear that you're having a killer time. I saw an episode of Bear Grylls where the great man came across a colony of red ants and didn't bother getting anywhere near them (probably knew what he was in for methinks) so kudos to you. Its great reading you're blogs mate, keep up the entries.
