At the risk of offending 1.7million Viennese, and several million more tourists (because this is a must-read blog that everybody in the world is savoring) I was not bowled over by Vienna. I had high expectations. People rave about its beauty, food, culture, architecture and of course its livability (previously ranked #1 in the world). But, well, maybe I missed something. Sure it was lovely, the Hofburg Palace, Opera house and the dozens of museums it has. I appreciate that it has lovely historical buildings. The riverside bars, beaches and pools set up for the summer are cute, the markets lively, but I came away underwhelmed. We had good, but not great meals, we ate icecream like locals, drank beer and went cycling (I admit we did not see any concerts). Perhaps it's like Paris or Rome that get better the more you go. It is safe, clean and conservative but lacked a certain kind of energy (from what I saw, I am happy to be proved wrong). I leave with a heavy heart and don't want to say anymore as I feel I am doing a lovely city an injustice.
