Gatwick Airport has the best cycle network of any London airport, apparently. Clearly then, it's been designed with us in mind, and it would be rude of us not to put this claim to the test. I think definition of 'best' and 'cycle route' needs to be reconsidered but otherwise it is quite an experience. It look an hour to unpack the bikes, rebuild, pump tyres, reload our panniers and ride off (in the wrong direction first of course). Once on the A23 it was straight forward, literally, we followed the same road all the way into Central London 40km away. There were still horse paddocks and farms 20km out, then there were double decker buses, pot-holes and peak-hour traffic. Then we got separated as we did what the locals did, weaving and dodging the traffic, running the gauntlet. It didn't take long before we were overtaking most of the traffic, sucked along behind other cyclists into the city. I glimpsed the Gherkin briefly a few kilometers out, but it wasn't until I crossed the Thames and riding past the Houses of Parliament, Westminster and Trafalgar Square did I truly get the buzz. Topped off by turning up to the Sofitel St James, much to the delight of the doormen. Cycling into London! I haven't had that much fun since, well, ever. I may be the only commuter with a big grin in their face.

kando Ahh haa I know the feeling! The first time I ever rode a fully laden touring bike was through the centre of London in peak hour traffic on a friday afternoon, a better adrenaline rush than bungee jumping!
Legs 11 You're right Katie! You can't help but feel a bit smug around all those people rushing to get WHERE? Even though they're looking at you, wondering what on earth you're doing. I will never tire of riding through London.
