We're determined not to feel cold at all today, so we've layered up - I had a vest top, t-shirt, long sleeve shirt and a hoodie on! Feel just about warm enough. And we needed to be wrapped up for all the standing around today...
I went down to grab some breakfast and overheard a familiar accent. There was a lad talking to someone and telling them he's from Huddesfield. Looked like a bit of an oddball with his purple hair and bright blue tracksuit. He was talking about being here for acting...
We didn't leave the hostel until about 1pm after ringing home and stuff. We weren't in a big rush today, as we just needed to stick around the area for the Oscars!!
We were walking down Hollywood Blvd, then this guy was walking towards us and then started singing to me and walking along with us, not just for a few seconds either!
It's absolutely full of fruit cakes in this place. There are so many odd balls. I can't believe there are so many mental people, at all.
We desperately needed to get a new memory card and were trying to find a place to buy one. Then we got diverted a few times because the roads and footpaths are closed off today for the Oscars. Anyway, we were in a rush to find somewhere, when we stumbled across a big queue on the footpath. Then we realised it was to get into a viewing area for the Oscars. The queue was pretty big and we knew there wasn't much space to get a view. So, we sneaked into the queue. Actually, I sent Therese first because she is quite sneakily good at stuff like that. Then about 10 minutes later, I jumped into the queue with her. Less conspicuous that way! Soon after that, the police started letting people in. The queue behind us was really big as well, but there was still quite a few in front of us. Then they split the queue into men and women because they were doing body searches! The men's queue was shorter so I got in quicker and shot up to get a good viewing spot.
So we had a good view with only a couple of people in front of us and were as close as the public could possibly get. We were stood behind a big chicken wire fence that had another one in front of that, so no running out to a star for a picture.
We were stood around for a bit until a few cars started rolling in. And we realised we had chosen the best side of the street to be on. Basically, we were stood at a T-junction and we were stood in the left corner of the T. The big stars were chauffeur driven from the left of the T, then dropped off in the middle. So, the cars had to drive right by us and we were as close to where they were dropped as we could be.
The cars started pouring in between about 2.30pm and 3.30pm. We have never seen so many stretched Limos (actually, they're stretched Lincolns) in all our lives. There were loads of them plus lots of BIG 4x4s. There were so many cars coming in dropping people off that it was hard to concentrate on one spot to see a star. I'm sure there were loads of people driving past that we didn't even realise were big stars. Nevertheless, we saw plenty of BIG stars!! We were rubbing shoulders with Kevin Spacey, Reese Whetherspoon, Robert Downey Jr, Russell Brand, Sandra Bullock, Colin Firth, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Helen Miren, Natalie Portman, Tim Burton with his wife Helen Bohem, Donald Trump, Halle Berry, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Matthew McConaughey, Justin Timberlake...
So yeah, not bad!!! Well, maybe not rubbing shoulders, but if we squinted hard enough, we could make a few faces out. Actually, the first stars I listed, upto and including Colin Firth, drove right by us made a real effort to wave to the crowd, so that was brilliant. We literally only got a couple of photos as the camera couldn't focus with all the fencing in the way.
We were stood there for about 3 hours, maybe a bit longer. It got really cramped in there and there was a bit of pushing and shoving going on. We actually ended up right at the front as well. It was really funny stood there though. Americans dramatise everything and are really comical. There were a few lads cracking jokes all the time, shouting stupid stuff like "hey pretty lady, look at me" and other stuff. Or if someone got out of a car with an awful dress on, someone in the crowd would make a loud comment and then everyone would start laughing and someone else would chip in with something funny. It was a really good atmosphere, we had a laugh listening to everyone.
Well, not often we'll get that opportunity anyway! Fantastic experience.
We were starving after that. We started walking back at about 5.30pm and hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. Fortunately, we still had some Dominos Pizza left from the other night. And we have a microwave in our room! We picked up a couple of sauces from the Domino's store on the way home as well. All we bought was a BBQ and a Ranch sauce...the woman looked at us like we were weird. So we sat eating our Dominos Pizza and watching the Oscars. To be honest, I never normally watch it, but we enjoyed it and kept recognising different people who we'd seen today, people who we didn't realise who they were at the time.
Pretty cool day today!
