So we arrived in Byron Bay to the sound of some friendly homeless drunks cheering at us at the station. We were picked up (late) by people from our hostel, one of which was from Bude in Cornwall. She sounded like a posh former so i thought she was probably from Cornwall but from a nicer part than me. We were in 5 bed dorm but were the only ones there which was cool. The hostel backed on to the beach so we went down for a wander. It was mostly overcast so we didn't stay out there too long. Had a few drinks at a bar by the beach that evening. The next morning we were picked up for a sea kayaking trip. We got into our wetsuits and carried the kayaks down to the beach. After a brief introduction on how the whole thing works they sent us off into the sea. Me and Lee were in one together and he was in the back so was responsible for steering (unfortunately for me) We were told to make sure we hit the waves straight on and we'd get through fine. It didn't work and so we capzised after about 2 minutes. Managed to climb back in and get out ok. Lee took loads of photos whilst i basically paddles us out to sea. They took us to places there was usuallydolphins playing and stuff but we didn't see any. We paddled in to a beach for some tim tams and Lee capsized us again and I dragged the canoe out of the water whilst he took photos. Once we'd had our break we paddled back out and managed not to capsize, did a bit more waiting for wildlifethat didn't show up and then went for the shore. This time Lee managed to spin us sideways and capsize us again, then i dragged the kayak on to the beach whilst he took some more photos.
In the afternoon we decided to make the most of the free surfboard hire we got from the ADHD guy in Brisbane. I have to say I was not particularly enthusiastic but as it was free thought we might as well. We carried the boards to the beach, sat on the beach for a few minutes and then headed for the surf! After a few failed attempts at catching waves and standing up on the board we realised surfing was not aseasy as it looks and headed in for a bit of sunbathing.
The next day we went to a travel bugs and got sold some passes for new zealand. Took a walk up to Cape Byron lighthouse in the afternoon. Kind of caught the end of the sunset. It was a bit like gale force winds up there and once the sunset we realised we'd be walking back down through a rainforest in the dark so we didn't stay up there long. So after a trek in the dark we got back to the hostel we saw on the news that there were storms coming in (hence the wind)...maybe should have checked that first.
Bus to Sydney overnight! It rained all night and still hasn't stopped. Great!
