Feb 2nd 2010 - Day 9
Cradle Mountain to Launceston
Today we had a bit of a "lie in" (sleep in for all you North Americans!)It was much appreciated as I rolled out of bed and realized how much my muscles were aching! Then it was off to meet the devil after a breaky of muesli, yogurt and juice.
The Tasmanian devil sanctuary was really interesting. We had a chance to wander around on our own and observe the wild devils in their own environment before the biologist gave us an hour presentation about the devils, their history and the perception society has regarding them. They are a very misunderstood animal and have unfortunately been wiped out in vast numbers because of these misunderstandings.Their numbers have been dwindling quite rapidly due to the introduction of the European Fox, traffic (2,000 devils are reported yearly as road kill), and illegal hunting because of their misinterpreted behaviour. The devils are actually quite friendly, however many believe they are vicious and aggressive beasts because they are often observed to be "fighting" or "hissing".This is simply not the case. Although the devils have extremely strong jaws, they do not bite to hurt one another, this is a mode of communication and unfortunately the method through which Devil Facial Tumor is spread. This type of contagious cancer has sadly led to an 80% decrease in their population.I can personally say that I have been one of the many that have fallen into stereotyping the devil, but after touching one and learning more about the creature I realize how sheltered a mindset humans can have!I guess this just reiterates the saying of "don't believe everything you read".
We then began to make our way towards Launceston where our tour would conclude.Five of the twelve people on tour are leaving when we reach Launceston, the others will continue on for a few extra days.En route to Launceston, we stopped at an award-winning cheese factory where we sampled more than enough cheese!I think there were about fifteen of them.. and you can't just try a couple you have to do the whole shabam of them!As if this wasn't enough.. I opted for an ice cream after the cheese!
Our next stop was at a lovely gorge where we had the option to do a short hike over a swing bridge or go for a swim.I opted for a swim since I have been in Australia for over a week and still haven't even put on my "swimmers".The lake water was lovely (warm to Canadian standards.. but apparently cold for Aussies.. ok well not Lachie, but for Ang).
After drying off we climbed back in the bus for our last journey which was the Quest apartment hotel where Lachie, Ang and I are staying for the next couple days as we explore Launceston. The apartment is AMAZING!(When I say this I mean probably better than the first house I'll own!)Ang and I shared a King sized bed with a kitchenette, living room, bathroom (with a tub!) and washer and dryer.Upstairs Lachland had his own little "manland" with a queen sized bed, kitchenette and washroom. And to think we were only paying $50 a night each for this luxury.. not too shabby!
At night we decided to go out to an Irish Pub for dinner and drinks to say a final goodbye to the rest of the tour. There was a really good acoustic act playing which made for an awesome atmosphere. The place was boppin' especially for a Tuesday evening!
