Day Three: Sunday May 23rd 2010
Today we awoke to rain and a phone call from Wayan asking if we could reschedule for tomorrow because the volcano he was going to take us to would be in the clouds. We agreed on the rain check and proceeded to breakfast since we were already up and ready. After breakfast, we caught the hotel shuttle into the neighbouring town of Kuta. Here we spent a few hours practicing our newly acquired bartering skills.I stocked up on fake Raybans, some typical Bintang (Indonesian beer) singlets (tank tops), cheap DVDs and souvenirs.
All our shopping left us pretty hot and tired… how the humidity gets to us foreigners! We stopped at the hotel for a quick dip in the pool and a Bintang at the pool bar before picking up some lunch. After lunch, we explored Kuta Beach and went for another swim.
Before getting ready for dinner, we went to a nearby spa (they are all over!) for a $5 full body, 1-hour massage!Talk about "cheap as!"The two girls were so sweet and funny! The one asked if I had a boyfriend and when I replied no, she was quick to say she had a nice brother… a "taxi driver… good job!"I guess Elizabeth Gilbert was right in her book Eat, Pray, Love about the Balinese asking three questions:
1)Where are you going?
2)Where do you come from?
3)Are you married/ do you have a boyfriend?
I think I've been asked these by every Balinese person I've met, or at least a variation of them!I've learned that it is frowned upon to say that I am wandering or don't know where I am going as it shows I have no direction. The third question is a touchy one because if you reply "no" then it is like saying you are unworthy of marriage. The proper response is "not yet".Divorce is frowned upon and averted at all costs. The fact that I don't even have a boyfriend at the age of 22 seems to bewilder the Balinese. It doesn't bother me at all; I actually quite enjoy watching their reactions!
Dinner tonight was absolutely wonderful. What else should I expect eh?We ate a fancy, upscale restaurant in Seminyak called "Sarong".For anyone Bali bound, I highly recommend it!The dessert is LEGENDARY!!!
