Lush Life
We arrived at the guest house early evening, and got settled in, before heading out just to check out Darwin quickly, and grab some beers and pizza.
My initial reaction to Darwin was that it was fab, which is great, as it's where I'll be living for the next 3 months. The cyclone in 1974 completely wiped the city out, and so it's all very modern, and is really aimed towards backpackers. The guest house where we'll be working and living is great, as are Asia and Rich, my new bosses. My room is well sweet, got my own tv, fridge, sink, air con (bloody needed), and the internet 24-7.
Asia and Rich told us that we'd been booked on a suprise trip for the next day, so we got off to bed by 10 cos we had to be up at 6! Anyway, at 6.30 the tour guide Joey turned up to collect us, wearing these goggle glasses, fake teeth, and staggering around with a wine bottle. We kinda gathered that it was going to be a right day from that point on!
We started off by going on a crocodile cruise, and turned up to be greeted by snakes! I held them-I was loving it, but Nads would only stroke them and then freak out, haha. We then went on the boat, which basically goes down the river looking for crocs, then attracts them by hanging bait from the side of the boat. They're dead big, and really pre-historic looking. They jump out of that water after the bait, which is all very exciting. Especially considering me and Nads have wanted to see crocs since we discovered they swim in the water on the beaches here. We're a bit sick like that! Haha
From there we headed off to get dinner, but not before coming across some roadkill, and Joey being the complete Steve Irwin freak that he is, turned the van around and picked it up, letting us all have a hold (I've turned into a right sicko since being here) to get pictures. Then after dinner he took the liberty of cutting it up, although it was quite informative. Got to know which bits are the best and how to cut it etc. Not something I think I'll need to know when I get home, but I'm in the outback at the moment and one never knows!
We then went to see some termite mounds, and got told some interesting stuff about them (Joey has done all kinds of pretty interesting things around Aus, he's dead informative), but then that clearly wasn't enough. We had to eat them!!! Well, ok, so we didn't have to, but everyone else seemed up for it, and they're only the size of ants. We had 2 varieties. One tasted like lime (seriously), and the other pepper. The aboriginals use them when cooking.
Then after all that excitement we went for a swim at some beautiful spring. Joey had some more antics up his sleeve though, and painted our faces aboriginal. We used rocks and traditional methods, and had our faces painted authentically. It was really interesting. On the way home Joey randomly stopped and caught a frill necked lizard from a tree (he's off his head) and then we headed home for a bbq with everyone from our tour.
It was such an exciting day, and we saw all kinds of animals, and learnt loads about them. We had a really good night, and had a bbq again on Saturday night, before I went out to watch the footie with some 18 year old girls who were staying here. They were a right laugh though, and the game was brill. As you're all aware, I got slightly drunk and lost my mobile phone, haha. I also spent the whole of Sunday throwing up. I was dying, hadn't boozed like that in a long time, but I needed it! I just didn't need the hangover. Asia and Rich must think I'm really unsociable cos I haven't left my room in what seems like days. Haha
I started work today, on a half day (get in). Got another half day tomorrow, so going to try to spend the afternoon on the beach, but its seriously hot here, and very very humid. People kept telling us that it would be when we were making our way towards Darwin, but bloody hell, this is meant to be winter! So I spend nearly all my time at the mo in my room, where there's air con! Haha
I'll email you all my address, you can send me mail, hehe.
Speak to you all soon, love ya's! xxx
There's new pics on aswell xxx
