We have now been back in England for three days but I just wanted to tell you all we did on our last few days in Brazil.
On Monday we woke up to find that the weather was rubbish again, but we decided to cut our loses and go to see Christ the Redeemer. We knew the weather would prevent us from seeing the view, but we thought we could just get a close look at the statue.
No such luck. We journeyed across Rio, then took the 20 min tram ride up the mountain he sits on, but as we went up the higher the rain just got heavier and heavier. When we got out on top of the mountain we felt like complete loons. The rain was torrential and not only could we not see the view, but when stood at Christ the Redeemer's feet, we couldn't even see above his shoulders. The marble viewing area and steps were extremely slippery, and we were two of only four idiots up there. After five minutes we went to wait for a tram back down the hill, feeling very sorry for ourselves.
We then decided to catch a bus to Copacabana so that we could do some shopping. We got on the first bus that said it was going to Copacabana, even though the driver said it took a long time to get there. We were just to get onto a bus and out of the rain. He wasn't joking though. It was a long enough route as it was, but the traffic and that time was awful. It gave us to chance to see lots of Rio but after a while it got annoying, especially after some old woman sat behind us, constantly trying to clear her throat. I had to do some yoga breathing in order to prevent myself from hitting her round the head with my umbrella. In the end we got so fed up and hungry that we got off the bus early.
The next day was a bit of a wasted day too (we didn't do to well in Rio). We waited around our hostel in the morning as we had to check into our flight online at 2pm. The weather was still awful so there wasn't really much else we could have done anyway. 2pm came along, but when we tried to check in an error message appeared. After several phone calls it became clear that someone at STA had made a mistake with our tickets, which meant that we couldn't check in online. At first I thought this meant we weren't actually booked on the flight, but thankfully that turned out not to be the case. It did unfortunately mean that we had waited around the hotel for nothing though. Never mind.
We had a lovely final meal of sushi that evening, and then bright and early the next morning got a taxi to Rio airport, to begin our journey home. The journey went smoothly, although we did have to wait at Sao Paulo for a frustrating couple of hours. We were really thrilled to get back to England. Especially as we landed into the beautiful Terminal Five.
We had the most amazing trip. It would be hard to remember all the things we've done now if I hadn't kept a blog and a journal, so thank god I did that. We now have the great task of sorting through all our pictures, and we have memories that we'll treasure forever. I can't recommend travelling enough. If any of you haven't done it before get out there and do it. We had the time of our lives.
