Koh Phi Phi was a dream!!
Before I go on I've just thought I should probably mention... To those of you who are reading the blog entry's to your kids you may want to read them yourself first so you can miss out the parts about ladyboys, and other inappropriate things, etc, etc!
Anyway... Travelling down to Phuket went smoothly, at the airport we met two guys who were heading to Phuket town too so we thought we would share a taxi to keep the cost down, the taxi driver knew we had nowhere to stay yet so he not so slyly 'stopped to see a friend for a minute'... Yeah you guessed it, his friend just happened to work at a hotel booking center, the lady rushed out to the car and immediately started showing us leaflets of hotels, we all ended up booking a cheap yet really nice hotel near the beach, when we got to our 'hotel' it was quite clear she had really booked us into another hotel, the lady at the counter said that the leaflet we had was in fact the sister hotel but we were booked into this one... Our room had no window, holes in the walls and bugs flying around, not to mention the cockroach in the bathroom. Lovely!! We went straight out for dinner just so we didn't have to spend time in there!
The next day we caught the boat to Koh Phi Phi. When we arrived I think it was quite clear to both of us we weren't leaving anytime soon.
We spent 4 days exploring the island... we rented a kayak and went to Monkey Beach on the first day, if you haven't guesses by the name, it's a beach full of monkeys, however we turned up at the hottest time of the day so we only got to see one monkey, the rest were hiding up in the rocks for shade.
The day after we decided to walk to the view point, it's the highest point of the island and as you can imagine getting there was no walk in the park, but once up there it was definitely well worth it!
The next day we took a taxi boat (which is a traditional Thai long tail boat) to Maya Bay for sunset, on the way we stopped off in a bay so we could go for a swim in the sea. We then stopped off to go snorkelling, before we jumped in our driver threw in some bread and a load of fish came swarming to the surface, at which point Lee jumped straight in and I became hesitant (if you don't already know I've never really liked the sea... Or should I say, the things in the sea) so after a few minutes of watching Lee have the time of his life I jumped in... It was pretty incredible under the water, the fish were everywhere you looked, they would swim right up to your face. After about 3 minutes of being in the sea I silently panicked and got back on the boat.
After this we made our way to Maya Bay (this is the place where they filmed 'The Beach'). When we got there it was full of tourists, however, the wind suddenly got stronger and within 2 minutes of being there it started chucking it down, initially this was a bad thing, until we saw everyone run off the beach and back to their boats, we were totally alone and had the beautiful bay completely to ourselves... The water was a chalky green/ blue, and so warm it was like a bath. I honestly think I'll remember that moment for the rest of my life. But as you have probably guessed we didn't get much of a sunset!
The next day we were due to leave, however, our washing that we did the night before (Lill, you would be proud, Lee washed his clothes the good old fashioned way... by hand) still wasn't dry, so this was the perfect excuse to stay one more day... So we attempted Monkey Beach again as it wasn't that hot, kayaking there was a bit of a mission though, it was seriously windy out at sea. Myself and Lee were bickering the whole way there as I 'was doing it wrong' (supposedly). Once there we could see about 7 or 8 monkeys on the beach. Lee bought a bag of peanuts with him to feed them, as soon as a monkey saw Lee had food it darted across the beach towards us, Lee held his hand out, the monkey took some, after eating them it decided that wasn't enough, and jumped up and grabbed onto the whole bag and wouldn't let go... Yes everyone, Lee had a monkey hanging from his nuts (excuse the pun ;D ) eventually Lee let go of the bag and the monkey ran off into the trees. After sharing my water with another one it soon decided that my water was in fact his and decided to show me by jumping towards me as if it wanted to sink it's teeth into me (thank god for the rabbis vaccinations).shortly after the all disappeared and we headed back to the hotel.
We really didn't want to leave the island but the next day we got our boat to Koh Samui...
