This beautiful Greek Orthodox a cathedral is just down the street and around the corner from our hotel. Unfortunately, the entire exteria and most of the interior are wrapped up in plastic at the moment as extensive restorations are in process. I cheekily took a few photos but felt guilty doing so. As you walk into the church there is an elaborate stand that holds the candles that people take and light and set in a candelabra. I am certain there are correct and appropriate terms for all these church furnishings, but I don't know what they are! All I know is that I fell in love with the gold-gilt peacocks decorating the stand / cabinet. My learned travelling companion tells me that in Christian religions the peacock symbolises everlasting life. And that there is a superstitious belief / idea that the flesh of the dead peacock does not rot! Interestingly enough, the guy that has sold me items of antique Indian jewellery at the Yandina & Peregian markets has told me that in the Hindu religion, peacocks symbolise fertility.
