The plan for us today was to drive to Milawa, where Rosa took us a few weeks ago, for a day of tastings. But first we stopped at the library again to get online and we booked a hostel in Noosa, north of Brisbane, where we will spend Kelly's birthday with her - should be good!
Dave planned to get his hair cut too but after a visit to the barber he returned with a suspicion that it was a local barbers for local people as they couldn't fit him in for a few hours (Mansfield is not that big!) so he decided to leave it for now.
On the way to Milawa, we stopped in the 'rural city' (according to the sign on the way in) of Benalla. It was much larger than most of the places around here and we were all quite impressed with it. We stopped for a coffee and a gingerbread Christmas tree and browsed in a few shops. We managed to pick up a Santa hat and some musical light-up antlers for $1 each - that's our Christmas Day accessories sorted!
Then we drove ten minutes down the road to Glenrowan, where the Kelly gang were finally arrested after a siege. Everything in the small town was Kelly-based, from the themed shops and cafes to the giant statue of Ned in his armour on the way into town. We paid $6 each to get into a slightly run-down museum that had a recreation of the Kelly homestead out in the back. We noticed on the leaflet that the business was for sale and we could tell that it had been neglected as we walked around. In the town, there was also 'Dad and Dave's Café', which we had to take a photo of!
A short while later, we eventually arrived in Milawa and our first stop - the Milawa Cheese Factory. We were hoping to do some cheese tasting first but there was a sign on the counter saying that the tasting was closed while they cleaned and re-stocked - of course it was closed, we should have known! So we decided to have lunch in the café first and ended up waiting ages for our sandwiches, as the waitress seemed to forget about them after putting them in the toaster to heat them up! We weren't having much luck at the cheese factory but managed to get a few tastings after lunch.
Next stop was the mustard factory where we tasted lots of their homemade mustards and Mam bought a few things to take home for Christmas. We spoke to the woman behind the counter, who told us that she's never seen the attraction of travelling as she likes it where she lives…ok then! After a two minute walk down the road we arrived at the Olive Factory and tasted some tiny olives along with some olive oil and dukkah (we need to find somewhere that sells dukkah back home!) We bought some olives to eat before we leave.
Our last stop of the day was Brown Brothers winery, which we also visited with Rosa. We tasted a few of their lovely wines and bought two bottles of their Crouchen Riesling, which is delicious! Mam and Dad bought a bottle of Viogner to drink before they leave! We had a very scenic drive back to Mansfield along the mountain road and then stopped at the supermarket for some nibbles for our 'running buffet' (?) tonight. Our TV viewing for the night was a repeat of the Sherlock finale which we all enjoyed after our lovely day out in the High Country.

Maria Bailey Lots of good memories of a lovely day. The chilli mustard was well received by Lee at Christmas and the Cabernet Jelly was a good base for the mulled wine spiced ham that I prepared for Christmas Day. Happy times...
