Today was our last chance to do 'touristy' things before leaving Sydney on 2nd Jan - tomorrow is New Year's Eve and we've written off New Year's Day as we think we'll be a bit worse for wear!
First on the agenda was to visit Susanah Place museum, across the road from the hostel, which is a row of 3 terrace houses that haven't been touched since they were built when The Rocks was first populated. They are small 2-up, 2-down houses and the museum has furnished them to look how they would have looked at different periods since they were built. We watched a short DVD about the history of the buildings, and then we were shown around each of the houses by the tour guide. It was a really interesting tour and there were a family with 2 kids who had never heard of some of the things in the houses, such as a typewriter!
Next stop of the day was the Pylon lookout at the Harbour Bridge, where we took photos of the credits sign, which mentioned the designers 'Dorman Long Co of Middlesbrough, England'!! We walked up the tower which had information boards on the way up, describing how it was made…any how many people died while it was being built! The views of the harbour and the city from the top were amazing, and we thought they were better than those from the Sydney Tower Eye the day before.
After that, we went back to the hostel for a few hours, before getting the train to Darling Harbour as later on we were going to see Happy Feet 2 3D at the imax cinema, which, at 7 stories high, is the biggest screen in the world! We had a wander around the harbour, and had some food at the Hard Rock Café, which was quite pricey but really nice food, and OK for a one-off.
Then it was imax time! We knew it was going to be a big screen, and it was HUGE! We had good seats as we'd booked early, so we were in the second row from the back and could see just about the whole screen. The film was really good, and as it was so big the 3D effects were also more extreme than usual!
After the film, we had another wander around the harbour, watching the different street performers (who all use the same jokes!). We went back to the hostel, planning on an early night ready for the big NYE celebrations tomorrow, but ended up staying up chatting to our roommates Caroline and Kieron for a few hours.
A very enjoyable day and night in Sydney!
