Boxing Day in Sydney marks the start of the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht race, which sets off from Sydney harbour at 1pm. We'd looked up which bus to get to Nielson Park, where the best views are, so after breakfast we headed to Circular Quay to catch the bus.
We arrived with 15 minutes to spare, and climbed the hill, following the crowds, to get a good view of the yachts. The spots where you could see the harbour were full, but we found a free spot overlooking the water where the yachts would sail past minutes after leaving the harbour. It ended up being the best view in the area we were in, and we soon had people standing behind us as the 80 huge yachts, and assorted smaller spectator and press boats sailed by in the water blow, at quite high speeds. The sky was also filled with around 10 helicopters overseeing the race and filming - we wved at some of them in the hope that we'd get on TV! We watched the action for about half an hour and took a few photos - another once in a lifetime activity ticked off the list!
The bus we caught back to the city was a lot slower than the express bus we'd caught there, and we were on it for over an hour. When we got back we had a slow walk back to the hostel, using the short cut up a LOT of steps that we've eventually figured out after 3 days! None of the supermarkets were open today as it was boxing day, so we went to the small grocery store next to the hostel to try and find something for tea…there wasn't much there so we ended up buying a tin of beans so we could have beans on toast! However, when we got back in the hostel there was a sign-up sheet for a BBQ tea for $5 each - hurrah! So we signed up, then plonked ourselves on the very comfy sofas in the lounge with the laptop and our books.
We spent the rest of the night uploading photos (almost up to date now!), reading and skyping Chris and Kerry. The BBQ tea was lovely - we both chose beef burgers, although kangaroo was on offer! We also shared one of the big bars of galaxy we'd got from Dave's mam for Christmas - we've missed galaxy chocolate!
By the end of the night we were both knackered, even though we hadn't done much all day - having fun is tiring!
