Another sunny day in Port Macquarie, so another trip to the beach for us. We also wanted to visit the koala hospital in town and had been told that the best time to go was at 3pm when they feed the koalas and also give a free tour.
We decided to go to a different beach today (one of the nine along the coast nearby!) so headed to Flynn's Beach as this was nearer the hospital. We packed our bags and our sandwiches and started walking; however we soon realised it would take us a long time to walk and we had handily arrived at a bus stop, so we caught the bus instead - more time on the beach!
The beach was lovely again and still busy with Aussie holidaymakers. We did some sunbathing and had a swim in the sea, but the waves were quite big and we got out after being swept under the waves a few times!
At 2:30, we packed up and made our way to the koala hospital which turned out to be an amazing place, ran mostly by volunteers. It's the only koala hospital in the country and they've had thousands of patients in the 20-odd years they've been open. They don't receive any government funding and depend entirely on the generosity of the volunteers and visitors' donations. There were quite a lot of people there for the 3pm tour and we were split into two large groups. Our guide took us around all of the different yards, explaining why each koala was there, how long they've been there and what their condition and treatment were.
The reasons for being there were quite varied but most koalas get admitted after dog attacks and road accidents, along with a common condition they called 'wet bottom', otherwise known, as our guide explained, as koala chlymidia - now there's a word we never thought we'd use in one of these entries! Hope the spelling isn't too far out!
