After a good night's sleep in our comfortable room, we went to find our free breakfast at the homestay. We wandered downstairs to where we thought the dining area was (a few tables and chairs at the front of the compound) and sat down. Soon we were asked whether we wanted tea or coffee - we were in the right place! The coffee came strong and black and was followed by a delicious breakfast of egg on toast, as well as fruit salad (we didn't recognise one of the fruits but it tasted good - it looked like giant bulbs of garlic!).
After a chat with the owner about our plans for the day, we left for one of Ubud's main attractions - The Monkey Forest! We'd read about this place online - an area of jungle housing 3 holy temples and hundreds of Balinese Mackque monkeys. Apparently they can get quite vicious if touched or if you take their food (bananas) away, so we avoided the ladies selling fruit on the way in! We paid 20,000RP (£1.50) to get in and somehow got away with only paying one entry fee. Inside were monkeys roaming completely free while lots of tourists like us stared in wonder as they ate, climbed and groomed each other. There were a few doing a bit of hairdressing which might explain their mohican haircuts! We wandered past all of the temples but didn't go in as you had to hire a sarong and scarf, we'll wait til we can get them cheaper in the market! One of the temples was down by the river along a very narrow, wet path - worth it for some photos though! We got lots of pics of the monkeys who were very entertaining and well worth the entrance fee!
We were quite hot by this point so we stopped for a drink just outside the forest at a café. Once we'd ordered, a guy who worked there came and sat with us for a chat. He tried to sell us some of 'his' paintings that were displayed on the wall and in the huge pile he'd given us to look at - we finished our drinks and managed to escape without buying one, despite the hard-sell. We've since seen identical paintings for sale in a few different places - surely he can't have painted them all?!
Our next stop was for some relaxation; it was time for a neck, back and shoulder massage! You can get treatments like this all over Ubud; we managed to find one which was good value at 35,000RP each for a half hour massage. It was really relaxing and felt like it should have cost lots more. We were shown to some seats afterwards ands served with tea and fruit - delicious! Feeling relaxed, we were able to cope with another trip into the crazy Ubud market - stalls packed tightly together and hawkers calling you around every corner selling everything from sunglasses to scarves, chess sets, knives, shoes, you name it! We picked up a few more bargains and we were impressed with our haggling - 2 Bintang vests from 150,000 down to 50,000 and a fan from 50,000 down to 15,000! Laura also picked up a new top from a 'proper' shop for 59,000 - a successful days shopping but we can't keep buying at this rate!
After the market, we headed back to Mawar for a few hours rest before going for an early dinner. We decided to try Savannah Moon Warung across the lane from where we ate last night. We had another fantastic meal including our first Balinese desserts (banana spring roll for me and Balinese pancakes for Laura) and an Arak Attack each to drink. Arak is the local wine and it was quite strong stuff. I fancy going back to try the Arak Obama (yes, really!).
After dinner we walked down Monkey Forest Road to check out a couple of bars. We ended up in the Laughing Budda bar and enjoyed some live acoustic music from a band with a couple of brilliant singers who took requests all night! On the way home we had to brave the rain, the first we've seen even though it's the wet season here. Another amazing day in Ubud - we like it a lot!
