As we've been doing very little apart from relaxing, we'll condense a few days into one entry here. So this is what we've done in Horseshoe Bend from Saturday 11th - Monday 13th June.
Our first job on Saturday was to upload the photos from New Orleans using the free computers in the rec centre and get the blog up to date. After we'd done that we asked for directions to the supermarket and did a 'big shop' to last us the week here at Crown Point Resort. The strange thing about the supermarket was that there was no alcohol aisle at all, as it is a dry county, although there was a vast array of 'soda' on offer. Shopping unpacked, we headed to the beach at the lake for the first time. Swimming in the lake is a strange experience, but a good one. It feels like you're in the sea, apart from the water isn't salty and there's no tide so it's really calm. We swam about for a while then dried off on the sunloungers. This is what our trip has been missing so far - somewhere to swim to cool off! That night we cooked good old spag bol in our cabin and watched some American TV - our favourite programmes at the minute are Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, Family Guy and a game show called 'Lingo' (our favourite channel is the game show network!). The news at the minute is mostly about the Casey Anthony trial - she's accused of murdering her 2 year old daughter Cayleigh in 2008 and if found guilty will face the death penalty, which is still legal in Florida. It's quite interesting to watch as cameras are allowed in court here so every day you see footage of the testimonies. The other big story is about Congressman Weiner who has been sending naughty messages to young women on Twitter! That was the first story we saw on the screens as we were waiting in line at Immigration in New York, and it's still going on!
Anyway, on our second day we had our orientation meeting at 9am where the activity director Joe Beavers told us about all the activities going on this week, and some places we might like to visit. He was raving about the Elvis show that was on that night and said it was a really good show, even if you didn't like Elvis. We decided we would go along to that. Then as we were walking out of the centre after the talk I spotted a newspaper article in a frame by the front desk. On closer inspection I discovered that the Elvis tribute artist is actually Joe Beavers! He didn't mention that bit did he - sneaky!! So anyway, orientation over we took a load of washing to the laundry room on site and left that going while we went to the pool for a swim. The pool was a lot colder than the lake but refreshing after sitting in the sun for even 5 minutes. After lunch, and a phone call to Mam and Dad Bailey, we went to the lake for the afternoon. That night we were enticed to 'Papa Dick's' for their Sunday special of chicken, potatoes, salad and garlic bread for $4.99! We're definately not in New York now! The Elvis show was quite good, Joe did a good show, but there were a few moments when we both looked around the room, full of people a lot older than us (apart from the kids) and thought 'what are we doing here?'. We got talking to some people from Texas who were impressed with what we're doing. After the show finished (at 9pm!) we went back to watch some more American TV in our very comfortable living room in the cabin.
Monday we had signed up for a boat trip at 2pm so we went to the lake for a few hours in the morning and then went back to the cabin for lunch and to change. The boat trip was really good and we got to see all the posh houses around the lake and hear how much they cost - surprisingly cheap compared to UK house prices! The boat was driven by...Joe Beaver, and he was telling us about how there isn't much around here to do for work 'unless you dress up as Elvis and drive a boat all day'! After talking to some more people, we were asked for the second time whether we were newlyweds on honeymoon! The entertainment that night was a local singer/songwriter called Dave Sharp who did a really good show too, but sang a lot of songs we didn't know. We also heard 'God Bless the USA' again, which we had first heard in the piano bar in New Orleans.
So that sums up our first few days in Horsehoe Bend, a little piece of luxury in the middle of roughing it!
