Laura's Travels
Well .. where to begin?! The last few days have been amazing and for that reason I'm sure they'll stick in my memory for a long time to come. So our trip along the Mekong Delta up to Cambodia was pretty spectacular ... we couldn't have asked for better weather and the stop offs along the way were fab. Okay so I must take that first statement about the weather back as on the first day of our boat trip oh my gosh did the heavens open. Hadn't quite seen rain like it. At the time we were meandering down the Delta on a little, tiny boat (very sweet) then all of a sudden the rain came; needless to say we all got pretty wet, well soaked in fact! Our first stop off along the river was at a small village .. first we were shown how coconut candy is made (so delicious - very similar to fudge ... ooooh yummy!); then we entered like a mini rice cake factory - witnessed these being made then had a taste, also really tasty. Okay so you guys will all no doubt turn your noses up at this next bit ... Katie and I tasted snake wine!!! Very interesting flavour I must say, fairly fishy .. hmm not sure if I'll be having it again any time soon though he he. Spent like the whole first day on a number of boats and got to see the sunset from the river .. absolutely stunning! Arrived at our hotel in the evening - went out for dinner with the guys and girls we were with .. all so so cool, ended up sitting outside til late just listening to music, very chilled. Oooh nearly forgot - Dan and I had our first beers of the holiday, definitely an acquired taste but one I might try and get used to as it's very very VERY cheap here (he he) and why not?! Okay so our second day on the Delta ... more boats of course. First one - small and wooden ... Dan and I were rowed around for ages by this little Vietnamese lady who I must add was so so strong, we call her supaerwoman! She took us to see a fish farm first of all and then we stopped off to see a mosque - very beautiful! Okay so we obviously wanted to tip our superwoman so we gave her like 40,000 dong which is just over one pound I think. Oh my gosh I've never seen someone jump around just as much as she did - she was so happy as normally she'd only get between 5,000 to 10,000 per day! It felt so good to see her so smiley and excited. Alright so after we'd said goodbye to our superwoman we clambered on board another boat oh and then another until we reached the Cambodian border ... we crossed over, then carried on our journey to Phnom Penh by bus. An experience in itself let me tell you ... the roads were so so bumpy and full of potholes, and we thought Brookshill Avenue was bad?!
Unfortunately we didn't get to spend any time in Phnom Penh as we had to leave very early the next day to get to Siem Reap. Not the end of the world though as excitement was mounting for the temples of Angkor. We've spent 2 days in total at Angkor .. chauffered around by our very own Tuk Tuk driver - Lee who by the way was so so cute, you could tell he was a real heart breaker in his day he he... don't worry guys he is small but I'm not packing him in my bag, he's married with kids! Words cannot actually describe how amazing Angkor is ... the temples are breathtaking. Got up really early this morning for sunrise - amazing! We've seen so so many temples in such a small space of time .. each unique and special in it's own way. Can't wait to show you all piccies on my return.
So in the morning we leave Cambodia - fly to Bangkok then get a train up to Chiang Mai. Spending a couple of days there ... very much looking forward to it! Will update again soon.
Lots of love x x x x x
