Well after leaving Byron Bay I was hoping that the weather would improve a lot now we were in Queensland finally. Unfortunatley that wasn't to be! It seem that like Byron, our time there was going to start off very wet. We arrived on the Thursday and didn't really do much that day as the weather was rubbish. It wasn't raining when we arrived but was a bit chilly. We parted company with the others we travelled on the coach with and then made our way to the hostel. This is the first hostel that we had stayed at up the coast that didn't offer a free pick up from the bus station. Granted it wasn't far away at all but I still wasn't happy about having to carry my bag that far. I think I really need to get rid of some things! The hostel was nice though and we had gotten a cheap deal because we booked a trip with Wicked Travel and got discount hostel vouchers. This meant we had to stay in a 20 bed doom though! This is by far the biggest room I have stayed in, but it really wasn't bad at all and I preferred it to our dorm in Byron even though that only slept 8 people. We just chilled out there that night; had some dinner and some drinks at the bar. You weren't allowed to to bring in your own alcohol (among many other things you weren't allowed to do) but the bar was cheap.
The next day we thought we would get out and have an explore. I couldn't believe it wasn't raining anymore but that didn't last for long. Our hostel was actually in a really good spot and right near the main town. We walked round the shops and bars etc then went to have a look at the beach, which was gorgeous. It was so long it went on as far as you could see and had lovely white sand. As it happended there was actually a surfing competition going on while we were there; The Boost Mobile Ariel SurfShow. It wasn't the main day but we stayed and watched it until the raining started to get too heavy. One minute is was boiling hot and I thought our luck was in, but then it started pouring down. It was only the junior surfers so we didn't mind leaving. We headed back to the hostel for a bit then went out for some drinks that night. The nightlife is supposed to be really good in Surfers and we had a great time. We went out with a couple fo guys we met in the hostel and then met Justins frineds from home in a Irish pub. After that we went to a bar called Avenue which was really good.
As we weren't feeling completely well the following day we didn't really mind when it rained again because it meant we could spend the day sitting in the hostel without feeling too guilty. The other friends we met in Byron came and moved into our hostel as there's was too far away so that was good. We decided we would all travel up the coast together so we will have even more fun now. We all had a big breakfast then watched telly. It was freezing though as well as wet and the TV room was outside under a shelter so it was a bit uncomfortable, but we sat and watched loads of films anyway. We all went out for a meal that night to a different Irish pub and it was really good. I had steak and guinness pie mmm! It feels like a treat going out for dinner now. We stayed there after for some drinks and we met Sean and Niamh who we had travelled in Thailand with which was great. We hadn't seen them since then. They had just come up for a couple of days from Melbourne to see Niamhs brother who was in Brisbane so we didn't get to see them for long but it was still good to catch up.
On Sunday the weather had finally improved and was like Aussie weather should be! We all went back to the beach for the day to see the main day of the surfing comp. We had dressed for rain but it ended up being a scorcher so there were a few red faces as no one thought to bring sun cream. I was fine though except for a sunglasses mark on my face! The competition was really good to watch though and we were there all day. This time it was for the professional world class surfers. We saw Mick Fanning who is world number one, and who Claire fancies like mad, and also Taj Burrows who is one of the most famous too. Neither of them won though! It was an ariel competition so all the surfers had to try and do tricks to win. They had a few heats and then the finals and loads of other stuff going on, and free giveaways. There were loads of people there and it was a good day out. We just chilled out that night as we had to get up early the next day because...
We went to Wet and Wild! Yay! We got up early to check out and have breakfast and then caught the bus to the park. All of us went as well as Leejay and Chris so there were 8 of us all together. We had a really good time. The weather was hot and the rides were brilliant. It wasn't too busy so the queues weren't stupidly long. I liked all the rides but my favorite was the Tornado. You went down 4 at a time on a rubber ring, down a slide then it spat you into a massive cone shaped thing where you spun and spun and nearly fell out. It was great! My worst one was the Kamakazi. It was like a really, really high death slide with water and very scary. The worst thing with that though was that when you went down it was so fast it took a layer of skin off your back - very painful! We all had a brilliant time though and I was really glad we all went. The only downside was having to queue for about and hour to get our lunch. We got the bus back and had some dinner at the hostel. Our bus to Brisbane wasn't until 10 so we had to hang around for a bit before we made our way to the bus station. The bus was late, which they never are, so we were all panicking thinking we were stranded at the bus stop but then it turned up and off we went to Brisvegas!!
