Cockers off exploring
I had an absolute ball driving around New Zealand.
I drove almost 4,000 kms, but if you're thinking of doing it here are a few tips to assist you:
- Share the driving with someone else - you'll also get many signs encouraging you to do that too
- Stop often to look at the scenery so you don't get distracted while driving
- Invest in GPS - although there aren't many roads always best if you're on your own to have GPS rather than try to read a map while driving
- Stick to the speed limits - the police are hard ass about that!
- Get some good music as the radio will cut out - if you're driving into the mountains or out into the country then invest in CDs or an MP3 so you have some company
- Don't be afraid to go slowly round corners on windy roads - you may see lorries and coaches going fast but they know the roads, you don't so don't make yourself sick or get into an accident and drive slowly
- Be brave and overtake, but take a deep breath and speed up if you see a car coming towards you - I had a few of these moments, but don't be afraid to overtake when the road is clear
- You will kill an animal or two so don't feel bad - bees, flies and possibly birds will fly into your car and you'll see a LOT of roadkill so don't feel bad. Apparently you're encouraged to kill possums if you see them as they're a pest
- On the west coast make sure you fill up at every station you see as you don't know when the next one is you'll come across
- Learn to love one lane bridges!
- Enjoy - it's a beautiful country so take in the scenery as you pass through it
Oh & also don't forget to make sure your camera is charged so you can capture your travels.
Plus each bigger town has an icon (statue) that marks them out from others, I only managed to get a few but it certainly makes your trip more interesting!!
