We had breakfast in the amazing bakery around the corner from us, I had a mozzarella bun with coffee, and Alice had an orange and raisin thing with a mocha.
On our walk to the bus, a Thai man told us that because it was the first day of celebrations for the New Year, we should go to a temple and the golden mountain as it was free entry today, and that tailors were giving discount. He also said we should go to the Tourism Office as it would be hard to find accommodation in Chiang Mai for New Year's. He flagged us down a government tuk-tuk (that has flags on) which cost only 30 Baht- a lot less than the non-government drivers would charge!
The worker at the temple also told us about the tailors and getting accommodation booked, as did the tuk-tuk driver and the woman who gave us directions later on- I was starting to think the government had brain washed everyone into saying it to every tourist!
I was a bit tempted to get a suit made for when I need to work again, but didn't.
Our intentions at the Tourist Office were to just get information about Chiang Mai (since we didn't want to go, the tuk-tuk driver just took us there anyway) but she used her scare tactics to get us to book 3 nights just to cover us for New Year.
The Golden Mountain was supposed to be 3000 steps high, but Alice only counted 313 (so we might have misunderstood the Thai man who told us about it). After we'd climbed it, we could look at the view of Bangkok.
We got a boat taxi to Siam Square so we could go to the shopping centre's food court. Alice had tofu and rice and noodle salad, and I tried shark fin soup which tasted a bit like a vegetable- it wasn't disgusting but I probably won't have it again. For pudding I had sticky rice with Durian (sticky because of the coconut milk, the durian is a fruit and tasted a bit strange) and Alice had coconut milk with colourful jelly noodles and sweets that tasted like fruit covered in jelly- I think they are made from soya beans- served with a bowl of ice in the centre. It was quite nice actually. We looked round the stalls, and I brought a Jimmy Choo purse. I knew Thailand was good for fakes but I didn't realise how good!
To be cheap and to get used to public transport for Australia, we wanted to take the bus. We waited ages for the 15 to turn up, but it never did, despite some going past on the other side. A lady told us we could get on a 47 so she helped us get out at the right stop.
Nils, the boy who we dragged around with us yesterday when booking the coach, wanted to meet for dinner. Me and him both had Chicken Thai Red curry and Alice had Pad Thai. We washed it down with a Chang beer.
