We were quite lucky on our journey from Chicago to Boston, the flight was fine and the taxis cheaper than anticipated, we also managed to get an earlier bus from New York to Boston. Therefore arriving 4 hours earlier!! After being dropped off at the wrong hostel we finally found ours, right opposite Fenway Park. The room was really nice and there were no problems with the hostel except for a lack of kitchen, so our final 10 days are definitly going to be more expensive than expected.
Our first few days in Boston were spent exploring Back Bay, Fenway and Kenmore, where we are staying, a really nice area. We then spent the day wandering down Boylston and Newberry streets, basically the shops!! We also saw Trinity Church, situated in Copley Square, which is gorgeous. A good photo opportunity is when it is reflected in the John Hancock Tower. We finally found Trader Joe's, which we have been looking for since we arrived in San Francisco. It is a really cheap organic supermarket. We explored Downtown Crossing, which is the center of Boston as well as Quincy Market. The area around the market was really pretty with lots of lovely buildings. We also strolled along the north side of the river, where there is a spectacular fountain.
On the wednesday we headed to see the new Harry Potter film which was excellent! The next day we headed to Beacon Hill, an old part of town where a lot of the area is important in African American history. Beacon Hill is also the most prestigious area in Boston with it's five story houses, cute street lights and cobbled streets. Apart from the cars and electric lights the area is the same as it was in the 1630s, which was pretty cool. We fell in love with Louiseburg Square which is home to Senator John Kerry as well as being the address of Louise May Alcott. We've decided we could definitly life here. We spent the rest of the day on Boston Common, reading and watching people playing Baseball.
On friday we set off to Harvard, only a few stops on the T. After walking around the campus we settled down in Harvard Yard and pretended to be students again as well as people watching. It is a very picturesque University and we imagine it would be good to have tutorials and lectures in the old buildings. We walked around Harvard Square browsing through the student run shops and used book stores.
On saturday we walked the 2.5 mile Freedom Trail on what turned out to be the HOTTEST day of our stay, at least it helped our tan! The traill takes you past all the important Boston parts of the fight for independence. It was an excellent way to see the city and highlighted just how small it is. We saw churches, graveyards and important houses as well as the Massachusettes State House it's a gorgeous old building with a golden dome on top. We also wandered through Boston Public Garderns, with it's swan boats and make way for the ducklings statue.
On our final day in Boston we headed to Government centre where we saw the golden teapot. We then went to Chinatown and the waterfront. It was good to see the rest of Boston before settling down in the park again and reliving the adventures of the past 5 months! We went out for a Last Supper at Chicago Uni Grill, just across the road from the hostel. It was good to have one last proper American burger before we head home. It was an excellent night!
We're just about to head to the airport and get our final flight home after the most amazing 5 months. Thanks for keeping up to date with our travels and hopefully you have enjoyed it just as we have! We will update pictures as soon as we are home and the internet is free!!
See you all soon,
Love the three of us xxxxxxx
