Well the jippy tummy I spoke of in Tikal turned out to be full blown food poisoning! I spent all that night over the toilet and you don't want to know the rest!! So I didn't get to see the ruins or any Jaguars... the boys went off on their own. They didn't see any Jaguars either haha!
Still sick as a dog I went with the boys the next day to Coban, a town half way between Tikal and Antigua. I didn't really feel up to the journey but it was a better option than staying on my own in the jungle without any shops or chemists. The 6 hour journey was quite uncomfortable for me as you can imagine. I was brightened up no end though when an old Guatemalan man saw me wretching out he window, got off the bus at the next stop and bought me some medicine! I almost cried! This man was clearly poor and yet he wanted to share what little he had to help out a total stranger. I checked the packet to make sure it was ok and sure enough it said (in spanish) anti nausia and rehydration. I only took one though to be on the safe side!
So we spent the night in Coban just to break up our journey to Antigua really. The next day we took a bus to Guatemala City to catch another bus to Antigua. To call Guate City a s*** hole would be to call Niagara Falls a slight trickle! We changed buses as quick as we could. This was crazy, confusing, smelly and I wanted to puke! Luckily Paul took the lead and got us all safely on our way. Not without taking a few unfortunate commuters out with our backpacks first! Bloody Gringos!
On the bus we were crammed in like sardines and the driver was a maniac! I was distracted from my nausia by a teenage boy trying to surreptitiously slip his hand between my thighs! I gave him my steel reinforced boot in the shin and jumped in next to Chris at the next stop.
We arrived in Antigua and did the usual wandering around to find a place to stay. This is gringo town so lots of places were full. We found space at a naff but cheap hostel which was good enough for now. I spent the night in the bathroom again! My favourite!
So I'm off out to try to enjoy Antigua and maybe some medicinal jungle herbs or something!
More jolly news soon I promise! xx
