At the risk of sounding like the intrepid explorer Mr Walker, the sleeper train from Zagreb to Split was the worst thing ever. Worse than watching Formula 1, worse than cricket. Even worse than England winning the world cup or those bizarre occasions when Peter brings a half decent girl home. But after a sleepless and uncomfortable night the grouchy conductor announced we were drawing into Split and I got excited as I envisaged myself impressing the Croatian girls with the whitest body they had ever seen while burning myself on the beach.
However, it was raining. A lot. Which meant we had to revert to plan B for the day - more culture and sights. It's good seeing churches and castles and palaces but we have seen alot of them and were definitely keen to kick back and relax.
Luckily on day 2 we awoke to glorious sunshine and made our way to the beaches which were pretty good. Great views of the chains of islands which shadow the coastline, lovely warm blue seas and heat! We were joined by a fair haired (ginger) irish friend of Jacks that we bumped into on the train. The sun didn't treat him well as it did Jack and I as he seemed to have a bizarre aversion to sun tan lotion...
Polished the day off with several beers, a nice meal of something called (roughly) Cevapi - some kind of mixed meat grilled sausage that is very popular in this part of the world! Then we took in an open air night concert overlooking the port by a band who appeared to be very popular over here. Highlights included a very drunk 60 year old local trying his luck with some teen girls - god loves a trier - I think...
The next day was a more relaxed affair and the only notable thing was a great meal - a huge plate of mussels for a little over 5 quid. Cashback!
After a final night in our dump of a hostel we sadly left the beautiful city of Split and jumped on a bus to ploce which inexplicably took nearer four hours than the advertised 2.5 but that's life I guess.
Ploce is perhaps the second worst place in the world (after the sleeper train of course) a horrible industrial town but provides the most direct link to Mostar, Bosnia which is our next stop!
