An 8 hour coach journey and we had arrived in Rome for the evening. A free roam around the town for the first night saw a visit to the Trevi fountain to unload our loose coins and through them into the fountain (we committed to visit Rome another 10 times with the combined amount of coins we threw into the water fountain). A very picturesque place before heading onto Piazza Navona Square for our dinner. Again fooled by the tourist factor, we were suckered into a cheap restaurant which offered free bruschetta and salad. Seemed too good to be true & it was. Our meals were ordinary (and that's being generous), consisting of microwaved food which resembled Heinz spaghetti in a can. Surely a good Italian meal was not far off. We went on to another gelato store after that and all the bad memories of dinner were forgotten.
The next day saw an early start in town for a day of walking tours in this historic town. A visit to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum where Julius Caesars body is buried was the first action. With so much history and learning of the age and background of the city's buildings and architecture, it makes you realise how new and insignificant Sydney is. With the temperatures soaring around 35 degrees, majority of the group decided that by midday we had had enough of the sights and opted to head back to the campsite for a swim and laze by the pool, and even utilised the gym for a workout (a massive struggle after many weeks off). A relaxing afternoon for many to work on their Europe tans and hang out, whereas Louis & Jack decided to push on and visit the Vatican City on a walking tour. They were full of praise for it and the pictures to support look pretty awesome, although it did come at a cost with Louis coming down with heat stroke and stricken to bed for the night whilst the rest of the group pushed on for the nights shenanigans.
The night saw our groups whiteboard party at the campsite bar. A nice start to the night with chilled music and a few drinking games, of course more limoncello. It was an opportunity for everyone to share what they really thought of each other by this stage of the trip, writing on everyones shirts with textas. We were soon to discover that the Lazio football team training ground was out the back fence of the bar and a few boys managed to get onto the field for a brief run and kick before security were on to us. The rest of the night was quite drama filled which felt like we were on the set of Bold & the Beautiful, with Doug managing to zero in on some Dutch girls and bring them down to party (a sixth sense of his). A late night burger fix from the old bus-turned Kebab store, which we were allowed to cook for ourselves before heading back to the cabins to sleep wherever you could find a free bed.
