Kya Travels
After a sleep in this morning, we were getting ready to go find some coffee when Will arrived back from his 'frustrating night of cuddling'. We went together down to the main part of Fremont and wandered the streets for a little while. We got a coffee from a place called the Fremont Coffee Company, who claimed to have the 'best darn coffee from the centre of the universe'. Apparently Fremont is the centre of the universe. My coffee had an epic devil guy as latte art, it was awesome. Darren got a boring old heart. :P With coffees in hand we kept wandering around the street. We found a vintage antiques mall that we thought we'd have a stroll through. Will bought a beach boys record (his favourite band, but least favourite album) and Darren had a play of a guitar for a while. On the way out Darren found this little old accordion and wanted to buy it. To my disapproval he bought it! At least it was only $20! When we finished looking through there, we walked down to a vegetarian cafe that Will said was awesome, called Silence-Heart-Nest. It was packed so we had to wait in line, but it didn't take too long. We got a table for four as Hoyt was going to join us, and ordered some drinks. After waiting for ages, we found out Amit was coming as well, so we had to be annoying and move to a bigger table! At least the buddhist servers had no problems with that! One of the ladies was so much like my auntie Susie, it was crazy! In demeanor as well as looks! Eventually Hoyt and Amit arrived and we were able to order some food. Darren got an omelette with a pesto sauce that was apparently the best thing ever, and I got a delicious black bean tortilla with all the good stuff, guac, sour cream and everything. It was delicious! After lunch (and having to pay with four different credit cards, which is apparently quite acceptable!) the five of us headed down the street to a music shop called Dusty Strings. They had a cool selection of instruments, about 90% of them acoustic. We worked our way around the store having a play of everything. Darren found a cool xylophone type instrument that played through pipes that had a beautifully haunting tone. Amit shredded on en electric guitar briefly, he was really good. Hoyt and Will don't play so they were just looking around. There was a decent selection (meaning about five) ????dulcimer hammer harps, which were awesome. Darren and I had a play of those then moved to real harps. The girl who worked there put a couple of them into a pentatonic tuning for us so it didn't matter what string we played it sounded great. A guy even walked past and told Darren how he wished he could play harp! Hilarious. The other guys slowly filtered out and headed home one by one after making plans to meet later, then after a bit longer Darren and I left as well. We decided to start walking towards the city rather than working out the buses, (Darren playing accordion as we went!) and as we came up underneath the main bridge, there was a huge sculpture of a troll! The troll under the bridge! He was huge and awesome, so we stopped for a photo. But we had to wait for ages because there were people everywhere, and a couple of kids who wouldn't stop climbing on it. They were probably about 12 and 15 so not really kids, and their parents got photos of them and then just let them keep running around, even though there were probably 10+ people patiently waiting for their turn for a photo! Eventually they moved to the other side of the troll (still on it but hideable in a photo) and we managed to get a sneaky photo before too many more people started jumping on it! After that we crossed the bridge, which took a while in itself, and walked towards the city. It wasn't a very nice walk because it was right on a highway, and the area seemed a bit dodgy (syringes-in-the-grass dodgy!) but we made it through and got to a nicer part of town eventually. We stopped at a bar for a water on the way, called Loredo's, and as we walked in the door, accordion in hand, the music was a Mexican style mariachi band with accordion! So we ordered a beer instead and had a chat with the bartender, James, who was really nice! We told him we would donate the accordion for their decorations before we left, and he was stoked because it was also mexican flag colours! After chatting for a while with him and one of the waitresses, ???, we kept on walking and went down to the EMP at the Seattle Centre. As we wandered along the street there was a disabled, maybe homeless, guy asking for change. And he had his cat, Ruben with him! So cute! We got a pat of Ruben, chatted with the guy a bit and left him some change. It made us miss the little Hendrix! We kept walking and came across the Beerfest that our friend Johnny from Portland had told us about. It was only $30 entry, including some drinks, so we decided to head in, even though there were only a few hours left! We got a little glass and some beer tokens, messaged Johnny to see if he was there, then hit the tables for some tastings. After a few tastings we sat down with a drink and saw a stall with a cage of kittens! They were so cute! Five little sisters running around and having a great time! We hung out with the ladies there who were just advertising kitten adoption (the ones there had already been adopted) and taking donations. We played with the kitties for a bit and donated a few dollars. The ladies there must have liked us though, because they gave us a little toy for Hendrix! After a bit we got in contact with Johnny and co. and met them outside. We had a couple of drinks together and caught up, but they had to go not long later as they had a dinner reservation up in the space needle! Apparently it's a 3 month waiting list to eat up there! So we said goodbye to them and grabbed a hotdog each from a hotdog stand that was the same as the other night, with the veggie dogs. It was still pretty yummy. Johnny had left us the rest of their drink tokens, so we grabbed another beer then went over to watch the band. They were playing Irish folk stuff and were encouraging Darren who was dancing around with his accordion! Another girl was dancing with her dog, which was pretty cute. We only caught the last two songs, and I was filming Darren's accordion antics, and as the song ended I pressed stop right as the accordion flew out of his hands... and broke. So I got its very last moments on film! When they were finished, we were chatting with the singer, who was a champion. He also gave us the rest of his beer tokens too! So after talking to him a bit we went to get one last beer, as the festival was wrapping up. Most people were done, and wouldn't give us any, but one place gave us one last sneaky tasting, then packed up. The singer came back to talk with us again, and as we were talking some random guy came up and started saying some weird things saying we were blocking him from getting a beer and now he couldn't get another one and it was our fault for standing there!! (After calling us names because we were Australian) Crazy... A security guard heard him as he was walking round telling people to leave, which gave us an excuse to get away from crazy guy, so we said goodbye to the Irish guy and walked with the security guard towards the exit and chatted as we went. We still had a bit of beer so we quickly drank them at the exit and ended up being the last ones to leave! We chatted to a couple of other security girls at the gate, who wanted to hide in our backpacks and come to Australia with us, then eventually we headed off. We walked towards the EMP and stopped for a coffee. I went to the bathroom and when I came back, Darren was telling his accordion story to a couple of people there. The old guy liked us and when his wife came back they gave us their EMP stickers so we could get in for free! So nice! There was only an hour left until they would close so we thanked them and headed off to get in. We walked straight in, no worries, and went to find the Jimi Hendrix exhibit. We asked some randoms where it was, (saying we couldn't 'find our way back') and the girl, Elizabeth, took us over there personally. As we came around the corner, there was a huge sculpture that went up the middle about two stories high that was just guitars and things going straight up. It looked pretty cool. Darren photobombed a random lady's picture, who was upset and then laughed very quickly. She turned out to be a bit of a weirdo! We quickly made our way through the Hendrix exhibit which was cool, then went around to where they had a Nirvana exhibit. We made our way through this one as well, which took a bit longer, and that was about all the time we had before the place closed up. At the exit they had some souvenirs and merch where we got some stickers, Darren got a couple of shirts and we got a cute little soundgarden onesie for Lyles new little bub, who had just been born a few days ago while we were away. After that we headed off and walked back up to the pub, Loredo's, from earlier. James was gone, but ??? was there having a drink, and the bartender who was working, Cam, was really nice, and excited about the accordion! We chatted with ??? about the strange couchsurfing experience we were having there, and told her a few of the strange things the guys had said, and how we didn't really feel that fantastic about it all. She was so nice she even offered us a place on her couch if it got any weirder there! So nice. So after talking with her for a while, and another guy, Rhanie??, who was drinking there as well, we called a cab and headed back to Fremont and got dropped at the bar that we were going to meet the guys, the Highdive bar. What we didn't realise was that it was already 12am! The last band had finished playing and was just packing up, and there was no sign of Will, Hoyt or Amit. So we just had a chat with Chuky, the singer of one of the bands, and his girlfriend, ???, who were really nice. When they left we decided just to walk back to the house. We pressed the buzzer, and got no answer... After buzzing a few more times, the door opened, and as we walked up to the landing, Amit was standing there in his underwear, saying "what the ****, guys? I was asleep!" Uhhh.... we never got given a key and we're sleeping here?!? So strange and uncomfortable! So we got inside and he went straight back up to bed, and we chilled in the lounge a while. It wasn't long before Hoyt and Will got back. They had gone to a different venue because they thought the band at Highdive sucked, but because we didn't have wifi we never got the message! Hoyt made some cocktails for everyone and Will went from pleasantly tipsy to falling over drunk in a very short time! He went on a big 5 minute English patriotic rant which was absolutely hilarious then went for a spew and passed out on the couch. So funny. And I filmed it. Hoyt went off to bed as well and Darren and I had another drink on the balcony before going to sleep as well.
