Kya Travels
This morning we got all our things together (hopefully!) and headed to the tube. We went to Euston station, where we picked up our tickets for the train/ferry trip to London. While we waited for the train we had a coffee in a cafe at the station, where Darren and I got some porridge and a croissant. It was the best porridge I've ever tasted! And it's from a train station! I think I'll have to hunt down some more amazing porridge when we come back!! We found our platform and jumped on the train. It was about a 3 and a half hour trip on the train, which was pretty uneventful (but very scenic and beautiful!), although the couple in front of us had a couple of little greyhounds with them that were soooo cute! We arrived in Holyhead, Wales at almost 1pm, and got a snack from the kiosk at the ferry port. Then we went to have a quick walk across the bridge and into the town to have a look. It was a very pretty, quiet little town. (Or maybe it just seemed quiet after London!) We got a couple of photos overlooking the port of Holyhead, then pretty much had to get back to the port, where we were the last people to check in! We got through the check in, then had to sit on a bus, waiting to be taken to the ferry! Once we got on the ferry, Lyle and Darren got a drink and we found a couch to chill on. We had a bit of precious, precious free wifi time, and all of us had a little snooze at one stage. We arrived in Dublin Port not long after 5pm, and went through immigration. (Had to dig through our backpacks for a bit to find the passports! Lesson learnt: always have your passport in an easily accessible spot before going through immigration!!) Once we were through, we had to find an ATM, to get some cash out. Ireland use the Euro, not the Pound Sterling, so we needed some cash! Unfortunately there were no ATMs at all in the port..... So we went to the city shuttle bus (usually €3), and told the driver our situation, and asked if we could get him some cash at the other end. He let us on, and didn't even charge us! What a legend! So we got to the hostel, got to our room (which is already much, much nicer than the last one, you can even stretch your arms out here!), and we met one of our dorm-mates, Carrie, who is from Adelaide! After chatting to her for a while, we discovered it was her birthday! So we invited her out for a drink with us. She said she might meet us out later, so we headed out to see what we could see-see-see!! ("...but all that we could see-see-see was the bottom of the deep blue sea-sea-sea!") We went across the river to the part of town called Temple Bar, which isn't a bar, but a few blocks full of pubs, clubs and restaurants. We walked through, looking for somewhere to eat, and came across a place called The Auld Dubliner, where we could hear music playing. We went in and there was a duo playing; one guy on guitar and vocals, another absolutely shredding a mandolin! They were amazing! (Further into the night, the mandolin player was playing a guitar, and played one of the most epic, ripping solos I've ever heard!!) We stayed there for a few pints. I had an ale called Caledonia Smooth, which I think may be my favourite drink I've had here so far! We sat at a table with a couple (prob in their mid-40's), who seemed really cool, who were from near Manchester. We were talking and joking with them for ages, and watching the music, then Carrie rocked up, so we shouted her a birthday Guinness. The couple from Manchester were super nice, and telling us about their kids, and they both even invited us to stay at their place when we were out there! Then all of a sudden the husband got really weird, and pulled the wife away, and they left out a side door with no explanation. It was so weird! I guess we don't have a place to stay in Manchester after all! Not long after that, we left, with Carrie, to find somewhere to eat. We went to a place called The Old Mill, where I had am AMAZING veggie pasta, and Darren had the most epic looking lamb shanks I've ever seen! We made friends with the Aussies on the table next to us, and we all sang happy birthday to Carrie. Then the waitresses brought her out some free ice cream for her birthday! Irish people are so friendly!! After we finished dinner we went to walk home and were offered free shots by someone advertising one of the clubs up the road. So we went up, but they wouldn't let Darren in with thongs, so we decided to give that a miss. Carrie was meeting up with an Irish friend of hers, so we left her to it, and headed back towards the hostel. We went past a laundromat, to see what their hours were like for the next day, then Darren and Lyle dropped me at the hostel, before they headed out for another pint of Guinness. I went inside and went to bed. (I found out later that they went to a pub called O'Shea's, where Darren went and (very unsuccessfully) tried his hand at Irish dancing!
