Kya Travels
We woke up early again today, around 6:30, packed up our things and checked out. We went around the corner to the BART train station, got some tickets and jumped on the next train to the SFO airport. About 30 minutes later we arrived and swapped to the airbus, which I think was a monorail to get to the terminal. We lined up and got checked in, and the lady was really nice and even gave us exit row seats for free! We got our boarding passes and checked one of our bags, then went to go through security. We got to the front of the line and gave our passports and boarding passes over, when the lady said "This isn't you" to Darren! After an initial confusion, we realised the lady at the check in had printed our passes wrong and one of them had some random name on it! Must have happened when we swapped to the exit row! So we had to go back to check in again, but were allowed to skip the line. She was bery apologetic and still really nice to us and printed a new one for us with no hassle. We were able to skip the security line as well, and went straight through. We walked to the gate and it was almost perfect timing to board. The hostess let us put the guitars into the closet, we found our exit row seats, stretched our legs out and both of us slept the whole way to Portland, Oregon. When we landed we grabbed a coffee from Starbucks, grabbed our bag from the carousel then went to buy a train ticket. The machine gave me my change in $1 coins, which I didn't know existed, then we jumped on the train into the city. We got off at the convention center and found our hotel. We checked in and made our way through the brand new building to a very luxurious room! A huge king size bed and a beautiful bathroom and just heaps of space. We didn't hang out too long though, before heading out into the city. We walked across the big steel bridge, which was called Steel Bridge and into the city. We instantly liked the vibe of the place as we made our way to Rogue Brewing. Darren started with a double chocolate stout, and I got a tasting paddle of four different beers. We chatted with a heap of people, including a couple of American boys in town for a wedding, a group of three who were here for beer and another group on holidays, and of course the bartenders. It was a really cool vibe so we stuck around for some lunch and another tasting paddle. The winner was the Cold Brew IPA which is a coffee one. It was amazing! (Although Darren preferred the Wasted Sea Star Purple Pale Ale!) After a while we went to check out another brewery, called Deschutes, where the two guys said they would meet us. We saw them across the bar, but as we ordered ourselves a couple of tasting paddles, we got talking to a couple from the Bay Area (around San Fran) at the bar, and by the time we picked up our paddles and turned around to sit with the guys they had disappeared! We must have taken too long! So we just went back to the bar and kept talking with the other couple. We made our way through the tasting paddle, but neither of us were too impressed and there were too many wheats, whites, saisons and hefeweizens which neither of us particularly like, so that may have brought our overall opinion of Deschutes down anyway. When we finished, Darren bought himself a nice button up shirt and we walked back towards Rogue to go to the brewery across the road, 10Barrel. We got a spot at the bar and ordered the tasting paddle, which had a much better range of beers for us. We turned around and sitting just up the bar was Johnny and the two others we'd met at Rogue! The bartender there was really cool to and we chatted with him and Johnny and co while we made our way through the tasting. When the guys left we said we might meet them at Bridgeport Brewing which was down the road. But in the meantime I was contacted by a guy on Couchsurfing, David, who had said he'd meet up with us and show us around, even though he couldn't host us. He'd said he'd meet us at Green Dragon, which is another brewery back on the other side of the river, so we walked over to meet him there. It took us about an hour to walk there, which was a bit further than I'd expected, and maybe we would have gone to meet the other guys if we'd known, but oh well. We met him at the bar and bought him a drink, then got a table and had a chat. He was nice, but it was a bit of a change of pace as we'd been having a great time meeting heaps of people, then here's this nerdy kind of guy who wants to sit in the quiet part of the pub and talk politics. It was okay though. After a while we were deciding on dinner, and decided against the vegan strip club in favour of a taco place called ¿Porque No?. We ordered some tacos and David chose another quiet table out the back. The tacos were okay but he'd talked them up more than they were worth I think, although Darren said his steak one was awesome. After dinner we were going to try find some live music, so David drove us back into the city but the venue was closed. We decided we'd just go get a drink somewhere, and on our way, we ran into the bartender from 10Barrel having a smoke on the street. (Weed was legalised here about a week ago) We kept on to a venue called River Pig, which seemed to be another kind of quiet dingy pub and we had a chat over one beer then decided it was time for bed. David dropped us back at the hotel and we said goodbye before going up to bed, where I fell asleep instantly!
