Kya Travels
We woke up in Anascaul today, and went to get on the bus. But it was locked... So we had a bit of spare time, so I took advantage of the free wifi, and Skyped Lachie and the family. After the connection cut me off, I went back outside where I discovered our driver had called in sick, so we had a new guy, Charlie, who was filling in. Our first stop was a town called Dingle. It's a little fishing town, and is said to be one of the most colourful towns in Ireland. We walked around for a bit. We had a choice to go on a boat to see the resident Dolphin in Dingle Bay, Fungie, but decided not to, in favour of just wandering about the town. We picked up some picnic food for lunch from the supermarket, then wandered up and down the streets, and past the many many pubs! Apparently there are 50 licensed venues in this tiny town, which has a population of about 2000! (If I remember right...!) We went into a few craft shops, where they had some really cool looking Celtic pendants. Darren really wanted one on a chain or something similar, but they didn't have any. The next craft shop we went into had a dog in there with the owner, who was just about to shut up shop to go down for the charity dog walk. We started to head back to the bus, and we met a man, his donkey and his two dogs. The donkey was pulling a cart, I'm not sure what was in it, I think they were about to set up a stall on e street there. The donkeys name was Macanta, which is a Gaelic word meaning 'kind and honest'. Next up, we drove around the Dingle Peninsula and Slea Head. It was very reminiscent of the Great Ocean Road, with the cliffs up one side, the ocean on the other next to a massive drop, and it was a beautiful sunny day! Apparently we've caught the most freak Irish weather while we've been here, it's the hottest run of days they've had for a couple of years! So lucky!! After driving along for a bit, and stopping at a few different lookouts to see the 'sleeping giant' (an island that looks like one, who apparently fell there trying to get back to his lover on the bigger island next to it), we stopped at a beach where we were going to have our lunch. We waked down some massive steps to the beach, and had our lunch on the sand under the massive cliffs. We had a paddle in the Atlantic Ocean. One person in our group was brave enough to go swimming, but it was a bit cold for me! After we left there, we kept driving along the road, which seemed to get skinnier and skinnier! I have no idea how its still a two-way road!! At one stage a car coming the other way had a bit of a stand off with the driver, cos he didn't want to back up 10 metres! (He eventually did, but he did NOT look happy!) Our next stop was just a random place in the bog-lands, around the mountains there, where we were able to climb up the path to the top of a smaller hill, with an amazing view over the ocean, islands and surrounding area. I went in bare feet, cos I couldn't be bothered putting my shoes back on, and it was amazing how the ground felt! Because it was on a hill, it wasn't bog-lands there, but the grass and soil were really spongy, it felt good between my toes! We climbed up the rocks, and got some photos from the top, which will probably look like nothing (it's so hard to capture amazing views like that on film!), and the wind was almost blowing us off the top, it was so strong! The next stop was at a beach called Inch Beach. Because it was such a great day, the beach was absolutely packed! But not just with people... Everyone drives their cars onto the beach and parks them like it was a carpark! Our driver told us how his friend has a tractor, and he just sits on the beach and waits for the tide to come in, then when people are bogged and need to get their cars out before he water comes in, he'll charge them €50 to pull them out! What I thought was funny, was that you could tell the locals by the sunburns! A couple days of great weather and they're all lobsters! We had a quick stroll and paddle along the beach before we headed back to the bus to go to Killarney, where we would be staying for the next two nights. On the way Charlie sang us a few traditional Irish songs, and recited some Irish poetry which was pretty awesome, but I can't remember them at all! We got into Killarney, checked in to the hostel (we got our own room too!), then headed up to have a quick look at the music shop before it closed. Unfortunately we were a little late, even though the sign said open til 6... We reckon they must have shut up shop to enjoy the weather! So we went for a walk around the town, (Haley came with us) and pretty much stuck our heads into every single pub there! We weren't hungry yet, but Haley was, so we walked around for about an hour before she decided to just get subway! We had a bit of a mini pub crawl, and had a drink in a few different pubs. We met an old Irish guy at the last place we went to, who was trying to recommend us a few places to go, but he was SO drunk it was hard to understand him! After that we went to get some dinner at a place called Macs Restaurant, which was pretty good, then headed to the pub we had been recommended by Charlie, The Grand. We got a drink and went to watch the traditional music that was playing there. After they finished, a band started at the other side of the room, who were pretty good, except the drummer kept trying to show off too much, with mega fills and that kind of thing, which kept compromising the timing of the entire band, which was a shame. We left not long after and headed back to the hostel and went to bed.
