Kya Travels
Today we slept in until about 1pm before getting ready and heading out.
We walked through the downtown area, stopping at Union Square for a coffee then kept walking towards the waterfront.
We were walking through the chinatown area, and came across a Vegan restaurant called Loving Hut, which may have been recommended to me by my auntie (she couldn't remember the name, but thought it was Love or something) so we stopped for lunch.
I got an awesome kale, banana and almond smoothie, some dumplings (called pot stickers here) and a teriyaki tofu dish. It was pretty yummy!
After lunch we walked down to pier 39, which was almost as busy as it was yesterday (I suppose it's still the long weekend) and went to the souvenir shop from yesterday that I'd seen a cool jumper. I hadn't seen a better one since, so I bought that, then we headed straight back off the pier (via a doughnut stall) and through the crowds of the waterfront and along the beach at Aquatic Park.
We took our time and kept walking along the beach, heading towards the Golden Gate Bridge, to try find a good spot for a photo opportunity of the bridge.
We stopped for a coffee at a Philz Coffee Van and continued walking.
The bridge was slowly getting bigger but it kept getting foggier and foggier too, so I was starting to think we wouldn't get a clear shot from anywhere!
But eventually after walking for maybe two hours we were at the base of the bridge and the clouds parted just for our photos!
After a quick stop there, we climbed the stairs to a little platform that was level with the bridge.
There were some cute little hummingbirds flitting around the flowers on the way up and some cool little tunnels and things too. It was pretty nice.
From the top it was a pretty nice view of the bridge, but there were so many people on the tiny platform that it was hard to get good photos anyway. The ones from the base were heaps cooler.
We had been walking for quite a while by this stage, so thought we'd grab a cab for the next trip.
And lucky we did, the hills we had to drive up and down were ridiculous!
We got dropped off in an area called Castro, which is the LGBT area of San Francisco.
So much so, that the pedestrian crossings weren't black and white, but rainbow! There were rainbow flags everywhere and all sorts of LGBT friendly bars, cafes and shops.
We went to a bar called Moby Dick, where I had a really nice beer called Anchor Steam Ale, and Darren really enjoyed his Lagunitas IPA.
Their bud light tap was rainbow, there were flags all through the bar and a bowl of free condoms by the door!
The gay shirtless bartender was really friendly and had a bit of a chat with us for a while. He recommended a place for us for dinner and after our beers we headed off to check it out.
So we walked up to the restaurant, Hecho, where we had a delicious meal and really nice service. Darren said it was the best Mexican he'd had on the trip, including in Mexico!
After dinner we walked back to the hotel, which was about 40 minutes through the 'dodgy' side of town, and went up to our room.
We organised our clothes and went down to the basement to do some washing, showered and got packed up for the next day as we waited for it to wash and dry, before getting to bed a lot later than planned, around 1:30am!
