Kya Travels
I had a night of pretty interrupted sleep, and Darren got hardly any sleep at all, due to Lena's house being on a super loud and busy road and the sun shining on our faces at 5am. When I got woken up, Darren said he had booked us into a hotel for the rest of our Vancouver stay, but it was a while away because there was nothing left in a decent price range around the city. It was literally 45 minutes away though, in a middle-of-nowhere place called Langley. I was a bit annoyed that he'd booked it without waking me up (though he said he'd tried) because when I searched, I found something else straight away... So we fell back asleep and got a couple more hours sleep before waking up at about 8am. We got our stuff packed up then left it all there and walked out to explore a bit, because we couldn't check in until about 3pm anyway. We walked down the street (via Starbucks) and went to the skytrain station, where we got some tickets and took a train downtown to the waterfront. We got off the train and went for a nice cruisy stroll along the waterfront. We were following Vancouver's sea wall, which is apparently the world's longest seaside path, covering about ???22km. We walked around and made our way to Stanley Park and kept meandering along. At the other end of the park we came to the Totem Poles, which looked pretty awesome. I think there may have been one really old one, but most of them were re-creations of native Canadian and Alaskan artworks. They looked really cool though! After a stroll through there we looked through the souvenir shop where we both found shirts, but no stickers. After that we cut across to the other side of the park and kept walking the sea wall. We passed the statue called 'Girl in a Wetsuit', which was exactly that. Usually it's located on a rock in the ocean, but the tide was so low she was just on a rock. The huge seagulls that were flying around the area were picking up shells/mussels/clams or something along those lines, flying super high then dropping them onto rocks to get into the meat. Clever birdies! That was pretty cool to see! We stopped a bit further up at a cafe where we got some fish and chips and a smoothie each, then afterwards we cut back into the park. As we were walking along the outside of the aquarium there we came across a little family of raccoons! There was one big one and four little ones just wandering up the stream, they were so cute! After following them along a little way we went back to the sea wall and retraced our steps back to the waterfront train station. We got off at Lena's stop to grab our bags then went to the petrol station on the corner for some snacks and asked them to call us a cab. It was about a 45 minute drive, ended up costing us about $100, and wasn't even in the town, but on a road a little bit further out! Oh well. So we checked in, and I used the wifi to try organise a catch up with our friend, Nuno, who was staying on Vancouver Island for a few days, then we had a snooze. When we woke up we went to walk into town, but about 5-10 minutes up the road, we ran out of footpath and there was no room for us to walk at all! So we were forced to walk back to the hotel and call a cab. The cab arrived and took us into town where we got dropped off at an Indian restaurant called An Indian Affair. Darren grabbed a bottle of wine from the shop down the road and we had an amazing entree of chargrilled veg and cheese and pretty yummy everything else. After our meal and a chat with the owner of the place who was quite nice, we got them to call us a cab then went for a quick walk while we waited. Darren had seen a craft beer lounge when he'd bought the wine so we went over to have a quick look, but it was just closed. We had a chat with an English guy and a Canadian couple who had just left and they recommended another couple of pubs, so we decided to walk down there for a drink before heading back to the hotel. As we were leaving we saw the taxi we'd called pull up too... oops! So we walked down the street a bit until we came to Earls, where we ordered a local beer and had a chat with the bartender, Rebecca, who was really nice. After a bit a couple of drunkish guys, Vince and James, came up to the bar as well and started chatting with us. I think Vince may not have been too well liked here by the way Rebecca suddenly had other things to do! And sure enough, within a few minutes, Vince had smashed his full glass of beer all over the bar! So poor Rebecca had to clean that up and called the last call. But when Vince and James were out having a smoke, she gave me another one. After that she was closing up, so we went with Vince and James to another pub, called Town Hall. Here, they had a beer called a Fat Tug, which we had been recommended by the English guy at the last place that we weren't actually sure if it was a real beer or just a joke to get Darren to order a 'fat tug'! But it existed so we got a couple and had another good laugh with the guys. The three boys went outside for a smoke while I stayed inside and I watched a guy come in and tell the waitress that they had drinks out there then go back outside. That wouldn't be weird but apparently out there, he had known Vince and acted all friendly with him, then had come in and dobbed on him! I'm getting the impression that this guy isn't well liked around here! So after one more beer, Vince was convinced that we should go to his house the next night and have an Indian meal cooked by his mum, so we said we'd see how we went, and exchanged Facebook details with James (Vince didn't have it) then said our goodbyes and jumped in a cab. It turned out to be the same driver that we had left at the Indian restaurant which was a little awkward, but we got home nonetheless and jumped into bed.
