Kya Travels
When we woke up that morning, Darren had a massive headache then had to go spew. We're thinking maybe food poisoning as he actually didn't have much to drink last night, just one in each place. So as Darren went back to sleep, I messaged Nuno to cancel our plans for Vancouver Island tht day, then went back to sleep as well. When we woke up again, Darren was feeling much better (must have been the goat curry) so we called a cab and decided just to go to a small town close by, Fort Langley, which was on the river. Turned out it was a cute little place, reminiscent of some of the small seaside towns back home, so we wandered along the street a bit, then stopped at a place called Beatniks Bistro, which Darren had seen pretty high up on the tripadvisor list of the area. It may have even been number one, I'm not sure. We ordered some poutine for an entree (why not, eh?) with the gravy on the side, then I had a quinoa and black bean burger and Darren had some kind of slow cooked beef dish. After lunch there and a chat with the waitress, we wandered down to the river and crossed the bridge over to McMillan Island where they had a nice walking trail called Tavistock Point Trail. We walked along there along the riverside and into the trees. It was an easy flat walk and very relaxing. The trees were so pretty and the gentle breeze almost made it feel like they were beckoning us in. At one point in the path there were a few people standing around, and when we got up to them there was an owl just sitting there in the middle of the path, in the sun, with his wings spread out. Assuming it was injured, one girl called the wildlife services, and the owl let us get some cool photos before deciding it had had enough and getting up, no problems and flying into a tree! That's the second nocturnal animal we've seen in the daylight in two days! When we looked in the tree it had flown into we saw that he was there with his buddy just chilling, and seemingly posing for my photos! After that we kept walking along the trail until we came to Tavistock Point. It was a small mud beach at the end of the island, with a pretty view over the river and the mountains beyond. A group of kids were having a great time having mud baths and wrestling before jumping into the river to wash off. And the clouds were just so intensely dramatic! I took off my thongs and walked carefully through the mud to get some pictures, which I think turned out extremely well! After chilling there a while we made our way back, via a detour for a longer walk and some pretty photos along the way, then stopped in at the campsite at the start of the trail for an ice cream. We sat to eat our ice cream and watched the beautiful talking and shimmering trees, then made our way back across the bridge to Fort Langley. We wandered around the streets a bit more before asking at Beatniks if they could call us a cab. They had an acoustic duo about to start, and let us sit on some chairs on the grass to watch the band while we waited. They were actually pretty cool, and we almost wished we hadn't called the cab yet, but this time when it arrived, we got in and went back to the hotel. We had a little rest while organisingto meet James (no word from Vince about dinner) for some dinner at the craft beer bar. When we were ready, we jumped in another cab and made our way in to where we met James. We went inside and got some tasting paddles (called flights here) and had a chat with James, Mike the bar guy, and another guy who was drinking there. Even the English guy who we met there yesterday dropped in to say hi! Mike was hilarious, and great at Aussie and Kiwi accents, and the other guy gave us a taste of his drink, which was an amazing IPA collaboration between Stone, Ecliptic and Wicked Weed. It was awesome. He was nice, but didn't hang out for very long, and we spent the rest of the time chatting with Mike and James, having some pretty awesome and funny conversations with our beers. When they were not far off closing, we ordered some pizza for dinner, finished our drinks, then went outside where we waited another 10 minutes for the pizza. We had a chat with one of the other bar guys out there and ate some of our pizzas. Then we called a cab, said goodbye to James and went home to get some sleep.
