We had a spontaneous change of plan this morning, we wanted to go to Sartaneja which is a small fishing town in northern Belize. As instructed by Sean we took a bus from Crooked Tree to Orange Walk city, however when we got there some people told us there were no buses to Sartaneja on Sundays and others said there were but they didn't come until 1pm (it was only 9.30am). Instead of wasting the day to find out we decided to just use it as a travelling day and go straight to Tulum in Mexico so we took the next bus to Chetumal, the Mexican border town. Although we would have liked to see one more place in Belize this meant we could get most of the rest of our travelling out of the way in one go. Crossing the border was easy but there was a lot of waiting around with our bags in the heat! Once in Chetumal we took a taxi to a different bus terminal and got straight on a 4 hour bus to Tulum. Nathan thought ahead and we got our Belizean money changed into pesos as we left immigration so we could pay for the taxi and bus.
The journey was almost exactly 4 hours so we arrived at the bus terminal at 7pm, this time we found a hostel in the Lonely Planet which was just one block away which made a nice change from negotiating taxis and not knowing how far away we are! It seemed a popular place with loads of tourists chilling outside in the garden area. They are also really helpful with organising trips and buses which saves us time and hassle for the next couple of days! We wandered around for some Mexican food and found a cheap place where we had an average meal of spicy meatballs, rice and beans.
