Hola! Apologies for the backlog of blogs, completing them feels like homework so we need to build ourselves up to starting them! So we arrived in Lima which is the capital of Peru slightly apprehensive about our lack of Spanish but hurrah we are now fluent....well we can ask for a large vino which is all we need!! Lima was not the prettiest of cities but our hostel was lovely, and was ran by 4 French boys who only had to say bonjour before helen swooned! On the second day we decided to brave the buses to visit the city...apparently not the done thing but we live and learn....we had a wander round the city and then as it was getting dark got the SAME bus back. It turned out to be going a slightly different way and we ended up in a very dodgy area. We wandered for a bit and decided a taxi was needed. I was practically holding Hel´s hand by this point through sheer fear as this was not an area for gringos! A little girl came up to us but we shoowed her away as we thought she was begging, minutes later she came back with her gran and grandad who in sign language...which made it all the more terrifying....told us that we needed to leave because bad men would slash our necks and take our bags! This was not good, a taxi was quickly stopped, many thanks were said and we made it safely home vowing never to step foot outside in darkness again! Mum if you are reading this please stop crying, all is well! Anyway we moved on to Cuzco via a 24 hour bus which was pretty luxurious, the roads were a little bendy tho which led to me dumping our snacks on the bus floor so helen could spew in the plastic bag. I would love to say that i rubbed her back and soothed her but i just couldn´t do it, im definately not a nurse in the making! Anyway we arrived at Cuzco a little worse for ware as the altitude had hit us and breathing was a luxury we didnt have! We were sat about, contemplating sleep, ready for our morning train to macchu pichu when we bumped into Chris from portsmouth, imagine our excitment at meeting someone from England after the traumas of Lima! He persuaded us to head to the bar for one small drink before bed....im sure you all know the story but a few vodkas later, having danced on tables, played amazing air guitar, got chatting to the locals and woke most people up trying to get back to our room, me and helen were fighting for the bathroom to puke in...not a very attractive start to south america! Needless to say we did not make the morning train and only ventured out of the room for water. Helen decided she was actually dying....which by the time i had sobered up i found very very amusing....she is loving travelling with me! We spent the next few days looking round the city, unsuccessfully avoiding people we drunkenly spoke too-danced with and fell in love with cuzco. The people are so friendly and love meeting travellers and the town is really pretty. Me and Helen contemplated taking a peruvian child home with us as they are sooo cute with their little red cheeks! We eventually took a train up to aguas caliente, a stop off on the way to macchu pichu with a lovely brummie couple. This place was like paradise, green mountains, forests and weird and wonderful animals, and it got us in the mood for our trip the next day to macchu pichu. We woke up at 3 in the morning and waited in the queue for the bus to the top, with me excliaming that it felt like Christmas...helen in her zombie state just shook her head at me....im finding she does this a lot! We took the bus which was fairly hair raising, especially when 2 buses past each other and the wheels edged closer to the sheer drop below but after all that we finally made it! And it was worth all the traumas and expense of getting there. The views were incredible, everywhere you looked it was a postcard picture. Definately the highlight of our trip so far. The weather was great and we joined a tour which took us around the ruins for 3 hours...with me occasionally sliding down on my bum or having a helping hand from a kind stranger! After the tour we just sat and chilled out, taking in the views. I have to say it was a little high for my liking, i did exclaim many a time that i had vetigo but it was still bloody brilliant! The day was thankfully uneventful aside from helen nearly getting butted by a llama...i can still hear her screams now!
