After a little hesitation i decided to join sooz and the guys on the favella tour this morning. I had been a little undecided as i felt it was kind of wierd to go and just gorp at how the other half live, and thought it would make me uncomfortable, but this is what its all about, seeing the places we visit for what they really are, not just the tourist hotspots! It ended up being better than i had thought , they had there sunday market on which was wicked, just them trading as usual. We saw all kinds of things like pigs heads, illuminous live chickens (think theyd been dyed) testicals and a penis all strung up for sale. All the meat stuff was a bit rank but i cant say id ever seen pigs brains before, now i have! This only lasted a few hours but from what iv heard on the news recently we were really lucky to be able to do it as recently things have gone a bit pete tong and people are shooting one and other again! Not ideal, but glad we managed to do it when we did!
After a rest atthe hostal myself, sooz and andrew went for a walk down ipanema and copacabana beach, the weather did not even slightly resemble the picture postcard images of the beach, it was grey and rained. As it was sunday they close one half ofthe road alo ng the beach front for pedestrian access. There was men and women of all ages shapes and sizes walking and jogging along the road. It looked like how imagine miami would.
We ended up grabbing a taxi back as time had flown by once again and we were supposed tobe at the hostal ready to be picked up at 4 for a football game we were going to. It was Flamengo Vs Fluminese at the marancana stadium (I could be making that up!), which we had been told was a big local derby and a sell out. Quite exciting on the way,the roads were chockerwith loads of fans walking towards the stadium., The game was amazing, the atmosphere was just something else, these were true die hard fans! Again everyone was friendly and welcoming to us and there was no trouble whatso ever. Sooz and I and the aussies and dave-o put on our bets for the game, and none of us guessed the 2-0 result to flamencos. Really good game, I was glad we had decided to stay longer in rio for the game, was well worth it as we were sat in the winnning teams end!Good fun! Once back in Rio we all went out to an eat all you can steakhouse, typicalof Brazil! Even for a veggie it was amazing, for 38 real they had all they could eat salad bar and sushi with fresh meat brought around everyfew mins and served at the table, ihad salad bar! It was a funnny meal, anthony tried goat and chicken heartswhich were on his to do list -im not kidding these things were the size of well....a chicken heart, valves and all,he pòpped one in whole and looked as though he was gonna puke it up, it was horrendous but highly amusing! Sooz followed the nights entertainment by chomping down on a whole fork full of green paste she pressumed was ´pea puree´ before realsiing it was wasabi! The meal was really nice and turned out to be a wicked evening.
