We've moved around so much for the past week or so that I'm probably going to miss things out in this entry, but to be honest New Zealand is all about the amazing landscapes and scenery, so you won't be missing much if I don't talk about it all, as it has to be seen to be appreciated. I warn, there may be a lot of the words 'spectacular' and 'stunning' in this entry!
Before leaving Kaikora we went on a walk past a load of seal colonies, and got a little shock when we nearly stood on one. It was so well camoflaged into the rocks! You're supposed to stay 20 metres away from them and we were about 1 metre. Luckily, it didn't seem at all bothered we were there. Krys recommended we walk back along a cliff top as he had walked that way the day before. Unfortunatley I was in flip-flops and the walk to the cliff top was as steep as parts of everest. Basically, I got a littel stuck half way up much to Krys' amusement. I managed to get to the top eventually half laughing and half crying. Was worth it almost for the view.
We didn't do a great deal in Christchurch. The world busking festival was on when we were there so went to a comedy night, where there were more jugglers in one event than I would have thought possible. Drove from there onto Lake Tekapo i think it was called, climbed up a mountian for more 'spectacular' views. Drove on to Dunedin, where I was very excited to go to the cadbury's factory. The guy kept trying to bore me with how the chocolate was made when I was just waiting for him to hand the stuff out to try! It smelt so yummy. They even had a chocolate waterfall. I was picturing something off Charlie and the Chocolate factory, but it really wasn't that impressive! Stayed on the Otago Peninsular, before driving onto Invercargill. Saw more Sea loins and seals very close up on the way, as well as some biggish penguins. We also stayed in a cool little place called Curio Bay, with resident dolphins and a cold beach- was almost like being in Scarborough, but with less ice cream and no amusement arcades! Krys has put a photo on the site of me jumping over a river. I jumped over it twice and fell in both times- It was the gravity that pulled me in! Not my fault. Krys found it the funniest thing ever. I wasn't so amused, just wet and cold.
From there we dorve on to Fiordland and did cruises on the 'stunning' Doubtful sound and Milford sound. Did an overnight cruise on Milford sound, and really loved it. It was just really calm water surrounded by huge mountains and hundreds of waterfalls. They get up to 9m of rain a year- Aussies would be very jealous. The pictures will be better than me trying to describe it.
So, on to Queenstown, the town for adrenaline junkies, and therefore not made for me. Krys was very brave and did this canyon swing thing. Which was a bit like a bungy jump, but a swing off a cliff instead. Think I was a nervous as him just watching. I did manage to go on the luge though, whihc was not scary at all, but very fun.
Today we have been on Fox Glacier, which I think has been my favourite day here so far. We Went up into a helicopter and flew over the glacier, then landed on the ice and did a hike on it. It was just so beautiful and weird at the same time. We climbed through ice caves and saw deep crevaces and surface streams. It felt a million miles away from anywhere. Definitely one of the coldest places we've been to this year, didn't really have the clothes for it! We're losing our tans fast which is not good news as we're coming home soon. Fiji will have to sort us out or I'm gonna sneak on the sunbed and pretend!
Lots of love,
Toni and Krys x
