Krys & Toni's World Adventure
Hi everyone,
After beautiful Langkawi, Penang was a bit of a disaster. We only planned to spend a few days there as we'd seen lots of beaches and were ready for something different, but even a few days was too much!
Georgetown is the big town on the island and we decided to explore a little bit. We decided to go the a place called snake temple a few km away, but after waiting for the bus which didnt turn up and a 'disagreement' between us which went something like :
'it's got to turn up soon we should keep waiting'
'It's not gonna come lets just go'
'But we've waited all this time we cant go now it'll come soon'
and so on, we decided not to bother! We instead decided to go to Penang hill, an hour away on the bus. Apparently had good views around the island. God had other ideas. After spending an hour on the bus to get there the queue was 2 hours long to get the little tram up the hill. Stupid school holidays. By which time it would beb getting dark. Totally fed up and having done nothing all day just got a taxi back to Georgetown. Ended up going to see X-men 3 at the cinema which was the highlight of our time on Penang in the end. It was quite funny. The film was in English with Malaysian subtitles, so at funy bits they laughed a bit late and seemed to find the really stupid jokes hilarious. Anyway, that just about sums up our rubbish day in Penang! Ah well, at least we weren't at work. Sorry, couldnt resist.
As it turns out, our next stop, the cameron highlands, more than made up for it. It is an old english hill station up in the mountains in the middle of peninsula Malaysia. It was really beautiful. Lots of tea plantations and jungle walks. It was a relaxing place that was comforting cos in some ways it was very English: tea and scones and rose gardens. We went for a few long walks through the jungle which were fantastic. Only awful bit was when we thought we wer lost and at the same time our path was blocked by the biggest spider in the while world. Honestly, not exagerating, I think it was the biggest in the world! Also saw a snake and felt like Tarzan (or George in the jungle for the younger of you) with all the vines.
We also did a tour around the area and went to a cool butterfly farm which also housed snakes and lots of scary bugs and scorpions which you could hold (see our scared faces on the photos when we get round to uploading them!). We also watched England's friendly with Jamaica- and will be including our photo of us doing the crouch in Malaysia v. soon!
Lastly, we've just left Taman Negara, one of the oldest jungles in the world (130 million years old apparently) and which houses tigers, bears and elephants, although we saw none! We went for yet more long jungle treks with John, a guy we met on the way. Sorry to be boring, but the trees were amazing, massive and so weird looking. We went to a cave which Krys went in (I was too scared as there were lots of bats and it was very narrow). We also did a canopy walk which was a 500m walk on little bridges between the trees like on 'Im a celebrity get me out of here'- very scary for me with my fear of everything. Worth it though as the views were great. We also did a night safari where we were supposed to see lots of animals, but which was a bit rubbish as all we saw were a few birds and a little wild cat.
We are now in Kuala Lumpur, the capital. So far seems like a really nice city, although I have had insomnia all week so am walking round like a grumpy zombie with bad skin- go on imagine it. Poor Krys.
I hear you have finally had some good weather there. Hope you enjoyed all the BBQs!
Lots of love,
Toni and Krys
