Krys & Toni's World Adventure
We are now in Cambodia in Siem Reap having crossed the border on Sunday. We wanted to cross on Saturday, but messed up a little and got to the border village late after a 5 hour bus journey and border control was closed. We therefore spent a night in a dodgy town called Aranya Prathet. Stayed in our first real budget accomodation complete with strip lighting and some insects! Oh well, only cost about 1 pound for us both.
Crossed the border pretty easily then got a taxi with another girl we met to here. It must have ben to most bumpy 4 hour journey ever. The taxi driver didn't stop beeping his horn at every car/person/animal/tree that we went past. At one point when bored I tried to see how often he beeped and never went more than 20 seconds without beeping his horn!
Siem Reap is nice, but the main attraction is nearby Angkor Wat. The old city of Angkor has to be one of the most amazing places we have ever been. I wasn't sure if I'd had enough of temples, but this place is something else. It is a huge old ruined city that was swallowed up by the surrounding jungle and which over the last 50 years they have started to clear. I (Toni) can only describe the temples as like on Return to Oz with the Wheelers riding round for those of you who have seen it. Apparently parts of Tomb Raider were also filmed there.
The main attraction is the central temple Angkor Wat. It is the largest religious building in the world and completely took our breath away. We had to climb up some increadably steep 'steps' to get to the top, more like climbing a vertical rock face without a harness. Toni didn't enjoy the climb and was nearly crying by the time she got to the top, wasn't sure if she could get back down! Worth it for the views though. The other temples were also cool but one of those things that's hard to describe in words. Saw the sun setting from the top of the highest temple which was very beautiful.
The jungle around the temple had wild monkeys in which was totally unexpected. We hired electric bikes and one just walked out in front of us into the road. We had some bananas so held them out and he came up and took them from our hands and ate them in front of us- fantastic. On the way home we saw 4 more monkeys on the road. Stopped to look at them again as there was a baby with them this time and they were jumping through the trees. One stopped in front of Toni's bike and she couldn't get it to move. Unfortunately when she moved the bike it thought she was trying to attack it and charged at her with it's teeth bared. She screamed and dropped her bike but it kept running at her until eventually backing away- very very scary! All she was thinking was 'Don't bite me, I couldn't afford my rabies jab!'. Anyway, been here a week and already been charged at by a wild monkey!
We went to a landmine museum today. Lots of mines and people living there who had disabled by mines and been taken in by the museum owner to help them get an education.
Hope everything's good at home.
