Just spent an amazing couple of days in Hoi An, Vietnam. The city is known for its Tailors and as a place to get custom suits made, but I will remember it more for the shinanigans.
We set out with the plan of finding a good place to get a quality suit and then also finding a cheaper joint to get some fun suits done as well. I'm happy to report that we were extremely successful.
We got top quality suits made at A Dong Silk, and let me tell you they look sharp. We also found a place called 7seven just down the street to get our fun suits. We cruised through a few shops but settled on this one because of the spunky, charismatic lady named Lu who was working. She promised us all the crazy/wild patterns and she definitely delivered (check the photos on this blog or my Instagram for the proof @krich052).
We went back to each shop on the following two days for fittings and developed quite the friendship with our new friend Lu. The second afternoon we actually spent a few hours chillin in her shop, drinking beer and chatting. She even got beer delivered for us when we ran out! Lu was full of surprises and her spunky charm kept us laughing for hours. Plus, the suits are fantastic. The craziest clothes I own and also possibly the most comfortable. Our fun suits were quite the sight parading around Old Town by the river. We got lots of comments and even had a couple people stop and ask us for pictures - basically local celebrities for a few hours.
Based on the fun we had, we referred people from our hostel as well as some others we met on the street to go and visit Lu. When we went back to ship the suits home, Lu got beer and chips for us, solidifying her place as my favourite person in Hoi An.
Apart from the suits, the city was also an amazing place to visit and be a tourist for a while. The busy streets were lined with shops and draped with paper lanterns. At night we frequented several bars and inevitably ended up dancing to Justin Bieber (from a crowd sourced YouTube playlist) and making all sorts of new friends at the "Why Not Bar" - very fitting name.
Taken together, Han Oi has been an amazing stop on this adventure. A place where you can do crazy things like go for lunch in your neon paisley custom fitted suit (and get celebrated rather than laughed at) is definitely a place that I like.
Maybe not this year or next, but I could definitely see me making another stop here in the future, either for the suits, for the shinanigans, or maybe both.
Keep it weird party people.
