Utila: La Mera Verga and an Aussie that We Couldn't Shake
Just spent the weekend on Utila! It's a small island (~8000 people) know for the diving and the bumpin party scene. We arrived on the ferry on Friday from Roatan. Duncan and our new Aussie mate Oliver came along for one night to check the place out, while Kurtis and I stayed for the weekend.
Friday night we took full advantage of the scene and did a little pub crawl. They have t-shirt challenges at bars so we expanded our wardrobe a little, including one from "Dr. John". The self-proclaimed "La Mera Verga" (literally translated to "The Big Dick" - colloquially meaning "The Coolest"); he's a guy who has turned his little house on the island into a regular stop for tourists to come and get a tshirt. It's a quirky and wild stop but definitely a fun one.
Saturday we spent a lazy day in the hammocks on the beach. Duncan and Ollie were supposed to leave on the morning ferry bur after coming back to get his shorts and shampoo, Ollie missed it. So we got to spend a couple extra hours with him.
Sunday morning we got up early to squeeze in a few more dives. We did one with big canyons on the north shore and then one close to the bay with a little boat wreck. Saw an eel, a cow fish, and a lion fish. Very cool, but not quite as exciting as our last few fun dives.
Sunday afternoon we packed up and bought tickets outta here. Made some local friends at dinner on the pier and then some people from dive shops at the pub before packing it in. Next up is a long day of travel overland to Nicaragua. Honduras has been a blast, but it's time to move along!
