Quick update on my first week in Melbourne.....
I was supposed to arrive last Tuesday at 5pm however after what Gold Coast airport considered extreme weather conditions (it was a a bit of rain for gawd sake) we were diverted via coach up to Brisbane to catch our flight so ended up getting in to Melbourne 7 hours late!! So after being picked up by Deesha at the airport I was starving and in need of a drink and we headed back to Dee's flat for a nice glass of wine before bed as Dee had to be up in a few hours for work.
The next day I spent frantically handing out my CV to all the local restaurants and bars in the area in the hope to get some work whilst I'm here and ended up being offered two trials one on the Saturday and one for the Monday after - RESULT!! That evening I made Dee and myself a nice steak dinner before two more of our Borneo buddies (Anne and Stine) popped round to watch The Notebook (sobfest) and catch up on our travels - turns out they are doing really well and hopefully we will catch up more whilst I'm here.
After securing my trials I had to go and undertake my RSA (responsible service of alcohol) course the next day and pleased to say I passed with flying colours which to be honest wasnt hard but surprising bearing in mind I dont responsibly drink myself ;) Also over the course of these few days I explored Melbourne's tram system just trying to work out where the best places were to go and found it really surprisingly easy even if I did wing it a bit - o well taking the scenic route I guess if I get lost.
My first trial on Saturday at a really cool cocktail bar called Bouzy went really well and luckily I landed a job 3 shifts per week so at least I have some more money rolling in in this very expensive country and I forgot how much I actually enjoyed working behind a bar which was a bonus. Also the staff were wicked I was joined behind the bar by a girl called Georgia and a Scottish guy who was really funny although I cant remember his name doh hopefully I will do by the time of my next shift!! There are so many funny coincidences over here as that evening I met a couple from England and the husband was from 20 mins up the road from me and drank in all the same pub - completely bizarre hearing all the local pubs after 3 months away including The Papermill, Fishery and The Boat.
On the Sunday Dee headed out for lunch with her friend and I later met them along with Anne in St Kilda for a few glasses of vino and the most beautiful sunset ever - as shown in the pic for this blog, I actually took loads as it was so magnificent - before heading back home and preparing for my next trial the following morning although Sunday drinking in St Kilda I could deffo get used to.
Monday morning and I headed off to my second trial at a restaurant called Niche which was only an hour trial and once again was joined by two Scottish waiters Douglas and Fergus who happen to be from Milngavie and Bearsden where my family live spooky!! Anyway it also went well just waiting to hear back so we shall see...... I didnt wanna put all my eggs in one basket so also headed to a hospitality agency that day and signed up for any casual work just in case before heading back into the city and meeting with my lil Brissy babe (well from Cornwall but we met in Brissy) Caroline who is now also in Melbourne working. Once again a few glasses of wine were purchased and a catch up about various antics since we have been apart then parting with the promise to catch up many times again before we both head our seperate ways again.
Now I am a bit settled definitely feeling a bit better and hopefully next time can update on some more touristy antics until then xx
