I arrived in Cairns after yet another plane journey to step off the plane to sweltering heat, it was still near enough 40 degrees at 4pm!! After giving the hostel a quick call for my pick up I was off to check in and make some dinner before having a relaxing glass of wine or two and getting ready for my reef tour the next day.
The next day I went to the reef terminal nice and early to catch my boat and get ready for a busy day on the reef. Throughout the day we took part in two snorkels whilst marvelling at the beautiful coral and many amazing fish including lots of clown fish or 'nemos' followed by lots of sunbathing or burning in my case. On the way back we also had entertainment in the form of one of the staff called Elvis who sang all the way back whilst we sat back with a glass of goon. We also saw dolphins jumping out of the water which was pretty cool and definitely cheered me up after some really upsetting news earlier in the day. That evening it was another chilled night with the girls in my dorm room before another early start the next morning for my next excursion.
So the next day I was picked up for my Daintree Rainforest and Cape Trib tour by an aboriginal guy called George and our group of 15 headed off to the first location of Mossman Gorge with gorgeous clear but freezing water I gave swimming a miss and admired the surroundings whilst chatting to a lovely Scottish couple who were staying at the same accomodation with me that night. The rest of the day was spent being told mad and slightly unbelievable stories by George and going on a walk through the rainforest before being dropped at our accomodation for the evening, a really remote location which was right on the beach perfect apart from the fact that there were massive jelly fish so no swimming in the sea and also massive spiders everywhere which made for an interesting walk back once we had had a few drinks trying to avoid the webs!! We were getting picked up the next day at 1pm so spent the morning doing a bit more sunbathing before getting back on the bus and being dropped at the river for our crocodile tour. ALong the way we spotted a couple of big crocs but most were way under water with just their eyes showing although Im thinking that might have been a good thing as they often jump very high to catch their prey. After the boat tour we began the lengthy journey back to Cairns as we seemed to stop at every spot on the way back prolonging the hot bus journey however that evening when I was dropped back at the hostel I was glad to find I was in the same room again with the same room mates Rachel, Danielle and Ellen so after offloading my bags we headed downstairs for a few drinks and a game of pool before organising a proper night out the next day to mark my last night in Cairns.
My last day in Cairns I admit wasnt very exciting as I was knackered from the last few days and had plenty of washing to do so just chilled out around the hostel and waited for the girls to return from their sky dive. My last evening was wicked as we went to the infamous Woolshed bar recommended by my good friend Miss JT back home and it didnt disappoint the night continued with plenty of dancing on tables, jelly shots, watching other people make fools of themselves with weird drinking games followed by a kebab!! It was a brilliant night although dreading the 7:45am 12 hour bus journey now uh oh..............
