Rach's World Adventures!
Reasons why Morocco is pretty high up my Favourite County list:
- The people. Now I'm pretty sure this is, for me at least, always one of the main deciders for if a country is awesome or not and Moroccans definitely didn't let me down! Especially considering what I had heard, which to be honest wasn't exactly the most positive, Liv and I were constantly amazed at the friendliness and helpfulness of almost everyone there.
- The mint tea. I could probably write a blog entry about this amazing creation alone but I shall try to refrain myself. It seems that Morocco is a country where with my super sweet tooth I fit in rather well... mint tea with sugar quantities you do not want to think about actually tops Indian chai which is saying alot!
- The buildings. I only took a rapid peek out of the window on the flight there but it was enough to realise that all the buildings are in fact the same colour. Sounds like it could be really boring but it totally worked! The ochrey/pinkish/mud kinda colour (photos might portray this better than my made up describing words) was gorgeous, seriously looked like something out of a storybook.
- The fact that within 5 minutes of getting off the bus from the airport we saw a snake charmer. Was quite freaky really, the snakes are just chilling there in the middle of the square but it was an essential part of what I had imagined Morocco to be like!
- The food. I have been told by a fair few people that my blogs feature food rather often but I truly believe its such a big part of travelling! Well, maybe just my travels. But still, what better way to get a feel of Marrakesh than to sit in the night market, eating brochettes and drinking mint tea while the smoke from the cooking burns your eyes and the sound of people trying to rather forcefully entice customers into their stalls blends in with the calls to prayer and the African constant drumming?
- The language. Being able to speak french before I arrived in France was great. Not so scary to try it out there as people were so tolerant of my poor grammer and didn't laugh too much at my charade like demonstrations when I didn't know the right vocab. I really enjoyed bargaining in french but my favourite was when Liv was bargaining with a guy for one of her multiple 'essential' purchases. She spoke to me in english, I spoke to the assistant in french and he then translated it into arabic for the shop owner = amazing! (amazingly slow too.... lol)
- The markets. Crazy! From the expected carpet shops to shops with colourful spices lining the walls and from the disgustingly potent smelling stalls of leather goods to the rugged old carts pushing amazing looking french style pastrys and cakes.
I could go on and on, and probably will do if anyone brings up Morocco in a conversation with me, but I honestly recommend it, or at least Marrakesh, to anyone - trust me, GO!
