We had an excellent time last night at the Maori Experience - well worth the money! It all started when we got picked up, on the bus the driver told us all the history and how the Maori people left to go to New Zealand, so we all had to pretend we were Mauri people and sail the boat (even though it was a bus!) One of the guys had to volunteer to be our chief and when we got there he had to challenge the Maori people by standing there and keeping eye contact whilst they did weird dances, poking their tongues out and making lots of noise. You were not allowed to laugh and we all stood and watched. We were then 'accepted' and were allowed to enter their village. We wandered around the village and spoke to them and had photos and we were then entertained with an amazing show of song and dance. It was so good! We then had dinner cooked by them in a Hungi which is basically and underground way of cooking - the food was amazing! On the way back, the fun did not stop as we all sang songs and had such a laugh - we were both really impressed.
We are now in Waitomo, which is a small town but we stop here to see the caves. We did a walk through the caves this afternoon, but we were not allowed to take photos because it stops the Glo-worms from glowing - which was a shame because the sights were amazing. We walked through for about half an hour then got into a boat about 45ft underground and floated along looking up at all the Glo-worms. It was so dark that it looked like the sky at night with all the Glo-worms as stars - funny things really!
Well, having a chilled one tonight with a bottle of wine. Heading off to Taupo in the morning where I will do a skydive!!!! Yippee - its all booked so no getting out of it!
