We've just arrived at our third hotel. The view is of mount Kinabalu, of which we just trekked along the foothills this morning. Finally the air was cool and the humidity was gone! Our tour guide, Hans (unfortunately not of the Southern Isles...) introduced us to all the native plants of Borneo, including the Sleeping Orchid which costs about £1500 to buy!
We were previously dropped at a handicraft market (stuff shops!) of which every stall sold the same tat. Loved it!
We then visited the war memorial of the POW camp where hundreds of British and Australian soldiers died. There are now beautiful gardens in place, with lists of names after names of the deceased. Thought provoking!
Yesterday, we transferred to the Shangri-La hotel. We assumed lush luxury 5 star accommodation once we heard this name, googling it and being amazed at the infinity pools and spa. However, though a nice hotel, it was anything but what we expected! Turns out they have just stolen the Shangri-La name. Lovely.
We explored more markets and I bought some funky patterned harem trousers. So now I look like a cross between Aladdin or MC Hammer.
We found a strip of bars along the sea front where we stopped for several drinks and snacks. Including an irish bar! What we've learnt? Onion rings in Malaysia aren't rings at all. Odd.
