Arrived in Rainbow beach at 7.40am, chucked out bags into Dingos Beach Resort and went for some breakfast;
coffee and a sausage roll. Spent the morning on rainbow beach, it was really beautiful and very hot, even from early in the morning, especially the sand, we could hardly walk on it. Did a bit of sunbathing and swimming, tho I was a bit scared of the jellyfish. We headed back to the hostel and got checked in at 11am, and the room was fine. Had my first shower in 3 days, was heaven.
Then we took some body boards and went body boarding back down at rainbow beach. This consisted of me getting into the water until I saw a jellyfish then running back out and sunbathing again. Got very burnt... We both have very sore lips, oops. That will teach us for not covering up.
At 4pm, we went for our briefing about Fraser, Island which lasted two hours and consisted of scaring the crap out of us! It was about dingos, snakes, spiders and rolling the car. Met our wee car group, And got our drink order in so we'll be ready to go.
The next morning we got up at 6.30am, showered, packed and had a pancake breakfast. We packed up the 4wd and off we went to the barge. Our group consisted of Spanish Jesus, Dutch Nick, English Laura and Ester, German Laura and Sophie (from our whitsundays trip) and us. On the barge, we saw Dolphins on the way. We got ourselves onto the island, first of all one girl got car stuck in sand lol Jesus drove us first. Through the walkie talkies named our four cars:
Golden Hawks, Cheeky Monkeys (us) White Sharks and Night Dragon
We drove until our lunch stop where we got a Gaytime and magnum yum! Then it was Kennys turn, he got a pretty easy drive to Wabby Lake. It was a 40minute hike, tougher than it sounds when it's through sand. Saw a massive spider on the way. When we got there, there were massive sand dunes: so pretty. Felt like we were in a dessert. Then we trekked down to the lake- a fresh water lake that had cormacks, flesh eating fish, catfish and turtles. The fish literally nibbled at ur dry skin and cuts, made me jump each time. Laura and ester drove next towards camp. In general it was the girls that got stuck, letting the team down, but not us, because we the cheeky monkeys! (Jesus has a monkey called Amelio, his friends gave him when he left so he would never be alone, how sweet. And the girls added on the name Dave as Jesus lives in England lol) Arrived at camp and made dinner of Asian stir fry and drank goon. Tents were already set up for us; they had mats underneath and a tarp on top so we wouldn't get wet but it was still the most uncomfortable sleep. We woke up on the middle of the night roasted and had to open up the the tent to get some air.
The next day I drove, I loved it. Hairy at times, when driving over the soft sand but tried to make it fun by flying over the bumps and soaking us in the water. We even saw two dingos!!! I swapped with Laura near the end and she drove the rest of the way to Champagne pools where we hung out for a few hours. Pretty pools, where the tide comes crashing over the rocks. We then drove to the other side of the beach and had lunch; opened up our cool box and it was just a mass of mayonnaise water, with ruined cheese and meat: disgusting! We salvaged what we could and through the rest out.
Then we drove to Indian head with Nick driving but it rained; so scampered up and back down again 5 mins later. We got into Jake, the lead drivers car, so the others could have a chance at driving. We drove to Eli creek, a fresh water stream that we walked up, then floated down back down, with some towel dropping on the way lol. We stopped by the Maheno shipwreck and done a human pyramid and some jumpy pictures. After we headed back to camp for tea and cake, then a steak dinner and goon, and my attempt to speak some Spanish to Jesus.
The next morning left at 9. Jesus drove the first part to first stop, then Kenny drove a little bit, then onto the girls Laura and ester for the proper off-roading making our way towards Lake Mackenzie. It was absolutely beautiful, another human pyramid in the water this time. Pure white sand again, water crystal clear that darkened a few metres out and surrounded by forest. We hung out for an hour, and bumped into the Swedish couple from our Whitsundays tour. Then it was my time to drive, and of course I get the hardest part. My legs were shaking from the word go. And my heart was hammering the whole time. But I did it, up down round and avoiding the trees. Managed to not get stuck either :) Girl power, we did so well! One of the cars died along the way, so had a little break to fix that. Then Laura drove the rest of the ropey area, and gave us a scare mounting the verge at one point. We arrived back for lunch at Eugene. Nicks turn to drive the beach drive. Got to a point where we had to go uphill on soft sand. The lead driver Jake got stuck. That took a while, had to take everything out of the trailer and all the people out of and eventually he got it up. Then we drive along a proper dirt road, dust in our faces, really bumpy and we drove past a metal grate on the ground. Didn't think anything of it, then Jake stops in front of us. It was the back door of his trailer that had fallen off, so ordinarily he puts it back on and we continue driving. We change drivers too so Jesus drives this time. 5 mins later and Jesus swerves and hits the breaks. What the hell! The door was off again, and he had to swerve to miss it coming for our windscreen. Holy crap! That was close. The next 15mins were uneventful but overall we arrive back 3 hours later than planned. Eventful but amazing trip. Back for a shower and then out for dinner. The one we went to the last time closed at 8 and this was 8.15, us all starving. Luckily the burger place a few doors down was still serving. Back at the hostel we had a few drinks before saying bye to everyone. Sad times, we had the best wee group; we done some good djing, blasting spice girls wannabe at the top of our lungs or singing the Titanic song as we drove past the shipwreck, we had such the wee choir.
